The narrator's self-identified rank and estate: an \emph{uryadnik} was a junior non-commissioned Cossack officer, and the Don Cossack Host was the historic self-governing Cossack community and military estate of the Don region.

"В двенадцатом году" means 1812, the year of Napoleon's invasion of Russia and catastrophic retreat; Don Cossack cavalry played a major, celebrated role harassing the retreating Grande Armée and seized enormous quantities of plunder in the process. Panteley's second treasure legend -- that returning Cossacks, fearing the state would confiscate their loot, buried it rather than surrender it -- reflects a real and famous phenomenon of 1812 Cossack looting, though the specific buried cache he describes is, like all the story's treasures, unlocatable legend rather than documented fact.
