The premier Russian conservatory of music, founded in Moscow in 1866 by Nikolai Rubinstein; Tchaikovsky taught theory there in its early years and Nikolai Kashkin was a longtime professor. The cellist Marian Semashko, on whose behalf Chekhov writes this letter, was a former student there.
