A Sakhalin district chief (окружной начальник) whom Chekhov met during his 1890 Sakhalin journey; Bely had asked Chekhov where he might buy a khutor on the mainland, and Chekhov, having no other candidate in mind, recommended the Yatsenko farmstead near Sorochintsy -- the same property the Chekhov family itself would unsuccessfully try to buy in late 1891. Some consequence of this old, offhand advice has evidently just come to light via Smagin.

Bely -- new to this letter, and identified here for the first time as a district chief (\foreignlanguage{russian}{окружной начальник}) Chekhov met during his 1890 Sakhalin journey -- had apparently asked Chekhov, in passing, where he might buy a khutor on the mainland; Chekhov, having at the time no other candidate in mind, named the Yatsenko farmstead near Sorochintsy -- the very property the Chekhov family itself would spend late 1891 trying, and failing, to buy (\S3). The word choice "\foreignlanguage{russian}{всплыла наружу}" ("has come out into the open," literally "surfaced") suggests Chekhov has only now learned, evidently from Smagin, some consequence or complication of that old, offhand piece of advice -- a small irony given how the family's own pursuit of the same khutor has just collapsed.
