Sivtsev Vrazhek and Denezhny Lane (Denezhny pereulok) are streets in the Arbat district of central Moscow. "Kapnist's house" identifies the residence by its landlord, Countess Kapnist, the same Moscow landlady in whose house Chekhov himself had rented rooms in 1884 alongside Palmin, who evidently still lodged there in 1886.
