Headnote

Written in Moscow on 15 September 1884, this short business note to Nikolai Alexandrovich Leikin, editor of Oskolki, finds Chekhov holed up at Countess Kapnist’s house in Golovino, keeping company with the poet Liodor Palmin (nursing a cold) over homemade cordial.

The letter is brisk and mostly commercial: three stories promised for delivery, an excuse for a stretch of idleness, and a wry aside about the meager and infrequent pay he has been getting from a rival editor. Chekhov also refers back to an earlier complaint about a lampoon printed in the Satirical Sheet, deferring the fuller account to their next meeting.

Dear
I am sitting in the house of Countess Kapnist, in whose salons dwells Liodor Ivanovich Palmin (the well-known poet). The poet is favorably disposed toward me, so much so that he treats me to his cordial. He has a cold, a cough, and a ringing in his ears.
I have three stories ready for you, which I am sending tomorrow or the day after. I have no thought of going anywhere; I am sitting at home in Golovino and being lazy. I would be glad to shed my lazy skin, but I cannot. As for my work for the "Yid," don’t worry too much: for the whole summer and September I have received from him only 3 coupons worth 2 rubles 50 kopecks each. I wrote to you about the lampoon in the "Satirical Sheet." If you are not satisfied, all that I have left unsaid, too long for a letter, I will tell you when we meet. I leave room for Liodor Ivanovich.
