Mlle Emilie
Emilie
also: Эмили, m-lle Эмили
Fictional character in the play "The Wood Demon", an old Frenchwoman and governess in Blagosvetlov's household, added to the cast as an afterthought to show how "gentlemen of the Wood Demon sort" affect women; kindly, still has "her spark," mixes French into her Russian when excited.
Reading notes
- To A. S. Suvorin, 18 October 1888. Moscow. §18 I left out of the playbill Mlle Emilie, an old Frenchwoman, who is likewise enraptured by the Wood Demon.
FICTIONAL CHARACTER -- an old Frenchwoman governess in Blagosvetlov's household, added here as an afterthought to the cast list given at \S6-15, meant (per Chekhov's own gloss) to show how "gentlemen of the Wood Demon sort" affect women generally. "The Wood Demon" in this section again denotes the character Korovin, not the play.
