An old family acquaintance who called on Chekhov and asked after Alexander, showing guarded disapproval -- without saying so outright -- of Alexander's living arrangement with Anna Ivanovna; "Nikolka" in the same sentence is one of Alexander's children, toward whom Glebov's patience regarding money is noted as unchanged.

Identified here with, the family acquaintance who called on Chekhov in 1888 to ask after Alexander and disapprove, without saying so outright, of his common-law household. The two mentions are not explicitly cross-confirmed in the source, but the surname, the family-circle context (Alexander again the subject), and the absence of any other Glebov in the corpus make identification with the same man the natural reading; his trade as a tailor on Bolshoy Palashovsky Lane is new information supplied by this letter, answering an evident request from Alexander for the address.
