The nominal editor of record of Suvorin's newspaper Novoye Vremya in early 1887, facing imminent imprisonment (reportedly for a press offense) at the time of this letter; Alexander Chekhov, as his presumptive replacement, was awaiting Fyodorov's jailing before he could assume the post -- the context behind Chekhov's needling question "Is Fyodorov still sitting [in jail]?"
