Gleb Uspensky (1843-1902), the leading Populist chronicler of peasant and village life; Chekhov's point is double-edged -- Uspensky's fiction and sketches were serious, well-informed writing about the countryside, but a city-bred newspaper correspondent's knowledge of rural Russia drawn only from reading Uspensky (rather than lived acquaintance) is exactly the kind of secondhand, armchair preparation Chekhov faults them for.
