A minor, otherwise unidentified figure in the Novoye Vremya social circle -- the subject of the gossip Chekhov asks about. Mild content note: the letter reports, in a joking register with no elaboration, that a woman (Volynskaya) "beat up" this man; translated faithfully as a passing piece of gossip, not dwelt on by Chekhov himself.

Named here, alongside, as examples of toadying Novoye Vremya insiders who defer to Suvorin as though he were a mere paymaster ("see a Gavrilov in Suvorin") rather than engaging him as an equal -- the type of contributor Chekhov contrasts unfavorably with the independent "young, fresh" party he wants Alexander to help build.
