Ivan Karlych

The gardener at the Pesotsky estate. He is away in town on the night of Kovrin's arrival, leaving Yegor Semyonych and Tanya to manage the frost-watch alone, and later is the silent audience for Yegor Semyonych's alternating fits of business-like irritation and rapturous, half-drunk-seeming praise of Kovrin's late mother and Kovrin himself.
