Ivan Makarych Matveichev

Ivan Makarych Matveichev, an old Zhukovo-born manservant in Chekhov's novella "Peasants" (Мужики, 1897): while ushering at Moscow's "Hermitage" pleasure gardens, he had found young Nikolai his post as a hotel waiter, for which Nikolai calls him his benefactor; by the time of the novella he has grown old and his earnings have fallen off, and his elderly sister, still in Zhukovo, anxiously asks after him. In the discarded draft continuation chapters given in this corpus under "Unfinished [Schulz]" (work id neokonchennoe-shulc) he lodges near the Patriarch's Ponds and lets Sasha watch the servants' dancing from his kitchen.
