Vladimir Lyudvigovich Kign
Dedlov
also: Дедлов, Dedlov-Kign, Дедлов-Кигн, S. I. Kign, V. L. Kign-Dedlov
Russian fiction writer and travel writer of the period who published under the pen name "Dedlov"; known to Chekhov at this point only by hearsay and reputation, not by having read him, when Chekhov identifies him in as the author signing a piece with a single numeral.
Reading notes
- To A. S. Suvorin, 10 May 1891. Aleksin. §3 The one who signs himself with a single figure
Suvorin had evidently asked Chekhov to identify a contributor to Novoye Vremya (or a similar paper) who signed a piece with only a numeral "1" (Единица). Chekhov names him as "Dedlov-Kign" -- the writer and traveler V. L. Kign, who published fiction and travel sketches under the pen name "Dedlov" -- adding that he knows the man only by reputation, not by having actually read him.
- To A. S. Suvorin, 10 May 1891. Aleksin. §3 Dedlov-Kign
"Dedlov" was the pen name of V. L. Kign, a contemporary fiction writer and travel writer; Chekhov's compound "Dedlov-Kign" gives the pseudonym first, then the real surname, the reverse of how such double names are usually cited today.
