Nikolai Petrovich Kolpakov

Pasha's admirer, a married man visiting her summer cottage when his wife arrives to confront her; he hides in the next room during the entire scene and, once his wife has left with the jewelry Pasha surrendered, recoils from Pasha in shame -- not at his wife's suffering but at having let a woman he considers 'pure' lower herself before someone he considers beneath her.
