The lawyer friend

An unnamed young lawyer, at the time of the story just starting out but by the time of its telling famous across Russia, who wagers he can talk his friend into writing a letter breaking off his engagement purely through rhetorical form rather than substance -- and does, before revealing he deliberately mangled the address so the letter would never be delivered.
