Schmidt
also: Поручик Шмидт, Шмидт
An infantry lieutenant and fellow traveler on the "Yermak," sketched comically by Chekhov: tall, well-fed, loud-voiced, a Courlander, a great braggart and a "Khlestakov," tone-deaf, having run through his travel allowance, able to recite Mickiewicz by heart, ill-bred, and talkative to the point of nausea. "Courlander" (курляндец) is a neutral geographic descriptor (from Courland), not an ethnic slur.
