Modest Ivanovich Pisarev (1844-1905) was a well-known and genuinely respected Moscow character actor, frequently cast in serious dramatic and villain roles; not to be confused with the radical 1860s critic Dmitry Pisarev. The noble father's mockery of his "wild voice" and flailing gestures as fit only for "ichthyosaurs and antediluvian mammoths" is exaggerated comic invective, not a documented criticism of the real Pisarev's technique.
