Unclean Tragedians and Leprous Playwrights

Headnote

"Нечистые трагики и прокажённые драматурги" ("Unclean Tragedians and Leprous Playwrights") appeared in the comic weekly "Будильник" ("The Alarm Clock") in January 1884, in its recurring column "The Budilnik Home Theater," over the pseudonym "My Brother’s Brother" – one of the many signatures of the Antosha Chekhonte years. It is not a story but a whole theatrical program compressed into three pages: a title, a mock subtitle ("Many acts, and still more scenes"), a cast list, an epilogue printed at the front instead of a prologue, and six acts that the piece runs through two at a time because the reader is impatient.

The target is Moscow’s spectacle theater, and specifically the impresario Mikhail Lentovsky and the melodramas manufactured for him. Real people appear under their own names as characters or as stage furniture: Lentovsky himself, who arrives in a trunk dressed in a playbill; the playwright Tarnovsky, who writes at a blood-covered desk with a skull for a head and dips his pen in lava; the actor Pisarev, handed the villain’s part before the villain exists; the comic Svobodin, the machinist Waltz swallowing red-hot coals offstage, the architect Shekhtel designing the cannon, the dancer Hansen cutting entrechats at the least appropriate moment. Chekhov had made the same joke a few weeks earlier in "Кавардак в Риме" ("Chaos in Rome"), and the two pieces should be read together.

What gives the parody its bite is that the melodrama’s own characters know they are in one. The young count demands to know what connection he has with the plot; Burl blames every misfortune on an unseen "Octopus"; the general explains that since he is the villain he must not resemble a human being in any particular, and eats raw meat to prove it; a man shot dead observes that the author who kills also raises up. The machinery is the subject, and the audience is in the cast list too – "The Public, a lady agreeable in every respect; eats whatever is served," a lift from the "lady agreeable in all respects" of "Dead Souls," and the sharpest line in the piece.

A textual note: the text was originally scraped in a broken state, split into the dramatis-personae list plus four fragments registered as separate plays (the piece’s own "Act One,Act Two," and so on), with an unrelated story concatenated onto the tail of one of them. It has been re-fetched in full and consolidated here as the single work it always was.

EPILOGUEI was going to put "Prologue," but the editors say that here the more improbable the better. As they please! Typesetter’s note. The crater of a volcano. At a writing table covered with blood sits Tarnovsky; on his shoulders, in place of a head, a skull; sulfur burns in his mouth; out of his nostrils leap little green devils smiling contemptuously. He dips his pen not in an inkwell but in lava, which witches are stirring. It is frightful. Shivers that run down the spine fly through the air. Upstage, trembling hamstrings hang on red-hot hooks. Thunder and lightning. Aleksei Suvorin’s calendar (provincial secretary) lies there too and with the impassivity of a court bailiff foretells the collision of the Earth with the Sun, the destruction of the universe, and a rise in the price of apothecary goods. Chaos, horror, terror... The rest the reader’s imagination will supply.
Tarnovsky (gnawing his pen). What on earth am I to write, devvvil take it? I can’t think of a thing! "A Journey to the Moon" has been done already... "The Vagabond" too... (Drinks burning naphtha.) I must think up something else... something of the sort that will have the merchants’ wives of Zamoskvorechye dreaming of devils three nights running... (Rubs his frontal bone.) Hm... Stir yourselves, you great brains! (Thinks; thunder and lightning; a salvo is heard from a thousand cannon executed after a design by Mr. Shekhtel; out of the crevices crawl dragons, vampires, and serpents; into the crater falls a large trunk, out of which steps Lentovsky, dressed in a large playbill.)
Lentovsky. Hello there, Tarnovsky!
Tarnovsky, the Witches, and the Others (together). Good health to Your Ex–lency!
Lentovsky. Well? Is the play ready, devvvvil take it? (Brandishes his cudgel.)
Tarnovsky. No, sir, not at all, Mikhail Valentinych... Here I sit thinking, and I can’t think of a thing. You have set me far too hard a task! You want my play to make the audience’s blood run cold, to set off an earthquake in the hearts of the merchants’ wives of Zamoskvorechye, to make the lamps go out from my monologues... But you must admit, that is beyond the powers even of so great a dramatist as Tarnovsky! (Having praised himself, he grows embarrassed.)
Lentovsky. Nnonsense, devvvil take it! More gunpowder, more Bengal lights, more crackling monologues – that’s the whole of it! In the interests of the costuming take, devvvvil take it, the highest circles... Treason... Prison... The prisoner’s beloved is married off by force to the villain... The villain’s part we’ll give to Pisarev... Then – escape from prison... shots... I’ll not spare the gunpowder... Then – a child whose noble birth is revealed only afterward... And at the end, shots again, fire again, and the triumph of virtue... In a word, cook it up to the pattern, the way Rocamboles and Counts of Monte Cristo are cooked up... (Thunder, lightning, hoarfrost, dew. Eruption of the volcano. Lentovsky is hurled out.)
ACT ONE

The Public, the ushers, Hansen, and others.
The Ushers (pulling the fur coats off the public). A little something for tea, your honor! (Getting nothing for tea, they seize the public by the coattails.) Oh, black ingratitude!!! (They are ashamed on behalf of humanity.)
One of the Public. Well, has Lentovsky recovered?
An Usher. He has taken to fighting again, so he has recovered!
Hansen (dressing in the dressing room). Won’t I astonish them! I’ll show them! Every newspaper will be talking!
The act goes on, but the reader is impatient: he thirsts for Act Two, and therefore – curtain!
ACT TWO

The palace of Charles XII. Offstage, Waltz swallows swords and red-hot coals. Thunder and lightning. Charles XII and his courtiers.
Charles (strides about the stage rolling the whites of his eyes). Delagardie! You have betrayed the fatherland! Surrender your sword to the captain and be so good as to proceed to prison!
Delagardie (speaks a few heartfelt words and exits).
Charles. Tarnovsky! In that harrowing play of yours you have made me live an extra ten years! Be so good as to take yourself off to prison! (To the Baroness.) You love Delagardie and have a child by him. In the interests of the plot I must not know this circumstance and must marry you off to a man you do not love. Marry General Ehrensward.
The Baroness (marrying the general). Ah!
General Ehrensward. I’ll make it hot for them! (Is appointed warden of the prison in which Delagardie and Tarnovsky are confined.)
Charles. Well, now I am free right up to Act Five. I’m off to the dressing room!
ACTS THREE AND FOUR Stella (acting, as usual, not badly). Count, I love you!
The Young Count. And I love you, Stella, but I implore you in the name of love, tell me: why the devil has Tarnovsky dragged me into this rigmarole? What does he need me for? What connection have I with his plot?
Burl. And it is all the Octopus’s doing! Thanks to him I ended up a soldier. He beat me, drove me, bit me... And my name isn’t Burl if he didn’t write this play too! He’ll stop at nothing, if only to make it hot for me!
Stella (having learned her parentage). I am going to my father and will set him free! (On the road to the prison she meets Hansen. Hansen cuts an entrechat.)
Burl. Thanks to the Octopus I ended up a soldier and am taking part in this play. No doubt it was the Octopus who made Hansen dance too, just to make it hot for me! Well, you wait! (Bridges collapse. The stage caves in. Hansen executes a leap that makes every old maid present feel faint.)
ACTS FIVE AND SIX Stella (makes her papa’s acquaintance in the prison and works out a plan of escape with him). I shall save you, father... But how are we to manage it so that Tarnovsky doesn’t escape along with us? Once out of prison he’ll write a new drama!
General Ehrensward (tormenting the Baroness and the prisoners). Since I am the villain, I must not resemble a human being in any particular! (Eats raw meat.)
Delagardie and Stella (escape from the prison).
All. Stop them! Catch them!
Delagardie. Be that as it may, we shall escape all the same and come through whole! (A shot.) To hell with it! (Falls dead.) And to hell with that too! The author kills, and the author raises up again! (Charles appears from the dressing room and commands virtue to triumph over vice. Universal rejoicing. The moon smiles, and the stars smile too.)
The Public (pointing Tarnovsky out to Burl). There he is, the Octopus! Catch him!
Burl (strangles Tarnovsky. Tarnovsky falls dead, but instantly springs up again. Thunder, lightning, hoarfrost, the murder of the Coverleys, the great migration of peoples, a shipwreck, and the call-out of every fire company).
Lentovsky. And all the same I am not satisfied! (Sinks through the trapdoor.)
