Not in the Mood
Не в духе
Headnote
"Not in the Mood" (1884) is a brief comic sketch about a bad-tempered official who takes his ill humor out on his household, only to be disarmed by his young son Vanya’s earnest, mangled recitation of Pushkin. The story’s small pivot – from petty domestic tyranny to a moment of unwilling tenderness – is characteristic of Chekhov’s apprentice work at its best.
Становой пристав Семен Ильич Прачкин ходил по своей комнате из
