Shurochka

Anna Mikhailovna and Arkady Petrovich's only child, a girl of marriageable age whose death opens the story and whose loss drives both her mother's turn to amateur doctoring and her father's return home; she never appears onstage and is remembered only in her parents' grief, most directly in the general's whispered prayer "Shurochka! My beloved child! My angel!"
