Headnote

A letter to the young writer Yelena Mikhailovna Shavrova (1874-1937), two days after the previous one, giving detailed line-editing comments on her manuscripts "Mikhail Ivanovich" and "At the Fortune-teller’s," and proposing "In Vino" for the journal Artist. Chekhov also offers, half in jest, to write an ending for her "Zilbergrosh" himself, and closes with an anecdote about the actor Filippych and a rehearsal he attended. Note: contains "zhidok," the diminutive of the Russian ethnic slur zhid, applied to a Jewish actor; per this edition’s no-softening policy for genuine slurs in the source, it is rendered at full force ("little yid") rather than euphemized.

I received the stories and read them, Yelena Mikhailovna, and I find nothing dreadful in your "Mikhail Ivanovich." On the contrary, it is all very restrained. But on Repin’s account, allow me to take offense: is it possible, in hot weather, to feed a writer suckling pig? Have some fear of God!
I used to order Zilbergrosh’s soup made from giblets, and the soup was every time astonishing.
Fifty years is too many for Madame Zilbergrosh. There’s no need to exaggerate. Forty is enough. It isn’t really a matter of years, though. She might just as well be twenty-three. The chief virtue of Madame Z is her excessive well-fed-ness. When she rocked in her chair, it gave the impression that she had eaten her fill of everything, and now felt queasy, and wanted something sour – a Byronic trait. Mikh Iv you have made very well, and she too, and the young officer. As long as you are describing what you have seen, it comes out splendidly, but the moment you get to Shurochka, whom you have never seen, out comes nothing but a cry from the soul and nothing more. Madame Z pays her tame goose 75 rubles a month; I don’t understand what this Shurochka has to do with it. It’s as if she came in, sniffed about, and left. Let her go off to her husband! With this Shurochka, and with the melting Olya, what you are doing is splitting the reader’s attention, and halving the story’s strength along with it.
"At the Fortune-teller’s" is a magnificent story, and I am terribly glad of it. Very, very good. Both stories I will take to Petersburg on Monday; I will take "At the Circus" there too, and "Kashtanka," if I can find a copy. As for "In Vino" – shall we not send it to the Artist? They are fond of godlike actors there.
Here is the thing: my hands are itching – will you not let me fashion an ending for Zilbergrosh? Answer by Monday.
From Petersburg I am going abroad; by Easter I shall be back in Russia.
Yesterday the blinking Filippych came to see me. Again they did not take him on. I felt sorry for him, and in the evening I went over to see him and watched a rehearsal. I liked best of all the little yid who played the marquis and for that reason could not rehearse without his sword. Sheer grace.
I wish you every good thing.
Yours, A. Chekhov.
