FICTIONAL CHARACTER in Modest Ilyich Tchaikovsky's play "Symphony". Chekhov compares him to Adashev, a character in Alexei Suvorin's play "Tatyana Repina," as critical shorthand for a recognizable type. Not a real person; not to be confused with the historian/ethnographer Nikolai Yadrintsev, an unrelated real figure of the period who does not appear in this corpus.

Yadrintsev is a character in "Symphony." Chekhov compares him to Adashev, the character in Alexei Suvorin's play "Tatyana Repina" that Chekhov had followed closely in earlier letters (see and surrounding correspondence, where the casting of Adashev was itself a live question) -- a comparison between two fictional characters from two different plays, used here as critical shorthand for a recognizable type, not a claim that the two plays are otherwise related.
