The otherwise unidentified courier through whom Chekhov sends his 31 August 1888 letter to Lazarev (Gruzinsky), since he does not know whether Lazarev is in Moscow or back at Kirzhach; distinct from Nikolai Mikhailovich Yezhov, the writer Chekhov recommends to the Suvorins in the same letter -- the two names differ by only a letter or two in Russian and are kept deliberately distinct.

The otherwise unidentified courier carrying this letter to Lazarev. The name is kept distinct in spelling from "Yezhov" in section 6 (Ежини vs. Ежов in Russian) so that the courier is not mistaken for the writer Chekhov is recommending to the Suvorins -- two different people whose names differ by only a letter or two.
