The stiff, old-fashioned formal salutation "Милостивый государь" ("Dear Sir"/"Gracious Sovereign"), addressed to Nikolai Nikolayevich Zlatovratsky. Referent note for translators: the salutation and the following line's direct address by name and patronymic ("Николай Николаевич!") are a single continuous address to Zlatovratsky himself -- not a greeting to one man followed by a reference to a second, distinct addressee. The formality reflects the semi-professional, not-yet-close nature of the correspondence, not any strain between the two.
