The two large villages between which the farmstead stood; Chekhov, a physician, notes that neither had a resident doctor, so the farmstead could double as a medical post -- one of his practical reasons for wanting the property.

Khomutets, one of the two large Poltava-province villages Chekhov had toured in 1888 while house-hunting, known among other things for its pottery; the errand here -- arranging for a shipment of Khomutets ware to reach Grigorovich's museum via Smagin, addressed to Petersburg "to bearer" -- is a small, practical favor threaded through the ongoing khutor-purchase correspondence rather than a literary matter.
