The period Russian rendering ("Матсмай"/"Matsmai") of Matsumae, then commonly used as a name for the Japanese island of Hokkaido as a whole (after the historical Matsumae Domain that controlled its southern tip), sighted in the distance from the steamer "Baikal" as it crossed the Tatar Strait toward South Sakhalin.
