The impoverished village to which Nikolai Chikildeev's family belongs, the primary setting of Chekhov's novella "Peasants" (Мужики, 1897): a cluster of some forty poor households by a river, known locally as "Lackeyville" because its boys are traditionally sent into Moscow service as waiters and hall porters. It is also named, as Ivan Makarych Matveichev's birthplace, in the discarded draft continuation chapters given in this corpus under "Unfinished [Schulz]" (work id neokonchennoe-shulc).
