A multi-volume published narrative of the 1802-1807 Pacific voyages of Russian naval officers Nikolai Khvostov and Gavriil Davydov, compiled from Davydov's notes and issued in installments; named here by the two officers' surnames alone ("Khvostov and Davydov"), per Chekhov's habit of citing multi-volume works by author surname, as part of the same wave of Sakhalin/Far East research reading he is circulating with Suvorin (compare Krusenstern's atlas in). Chekhov asks for the next installment in \S16, confirming it is being borrowed serially.
