The Cynic

Циник

Headnote

1 The Cynic (“Tsinik” in the original) was published in 1885. It was originally titled “Zveri” (“The Beasts”), and the change of title was not the author’s free choice: the story fell afoul of the censorship apparatus that all periodical fiction had to clear in this period, and it appeared under the softer, more abstract title by which it is now generally known. The setting is a traveling menagerie – the “Pikhnau Brothers” outfit – and its drunken barker, the former warrant-officer Yegor Syusin, who works the crowd from cage to cage with a running patter he calls explaining the animals “with psychology and a tendency.”

The comedy curdles as it goes. Syusin’s mock-philosophical monologues to the lion, the wildcat, the gazelle, the crane, and finally the rabbit fed live to a boa constrictor start as crude music-hall shtick and end as something closer to cruelty performed for an audience that first laughs, then turns on him, then – once a day or two has passed – drifts back for more. The target of the story’s irony is not really Syusin but the crowd: its hunger for cheap philosophizing dressed up as entertainment, its selective outrage, and its addiction to the very cynicism it claims to be disgusted by. No ethnic or religious slurs appear in the story; Syusin’s cruelty is directed at the caged animals and, by implication, at the public itself.

Noon. The manager of the “Pikhnau Brothers’ Menagerie,” the retired warrant-officer Yegor Syusin, a hulking fellow with a puffy, dissipated face, in a dirty shirtfront and a grease-stained tailcoat, is already drunk. He spins before the public like a devil before matins: running about, twisting, tittering, playing with his eyes, and coquetting, as it were, with his angular manners and his unbuttoned buttons. When his large, cropped head is full of the fumes of wine, the public loves him. At such times he “explains” the animals not simply, but according to a special method all his own.
“How shall I explain them?” he asks the public, winking. “Simply, or with psychology and a tendency?”
“With psychology and a tendency!”
Bene! \Good! (Latin).\ I begin! The African lion!” he says, swaying and looking mockingly at the lion, who sits in the corner of his cage meekly blinking his eyes. “A synonym for might joined with grace, the pride and glory of the fauna! Once, in the days of his youth, he captivated all with his strength and his roar struck terror into the countryside, and now... ho-ho-ho... and now, you great blockhead, he sits in a cage... Well, brother lion? Sitting? Philosophizing? And I’ll wager that when you used to roam the forests – where would you be now! – you thought there was no beast stronger than you, that even the devil was no match for you – and it turned out that foolish fate is stronger still... though she’s a fool, she’s stronger... Ho-ho-ho! Just look where the devils have carried you off from Africa! I’ll wager you never dreamed you’d end up here! Me too, brother, the devils have tossed me about something fierce! I’ve been through the gymnasium, and a government office, and land-surveying, and the telegraph, and the army, and a macaroni factory... and the devil himself knows where I haven’t been! And in the end I landed in a menagerie... in this stench... Ho-ho-ho!”
– Bene!
And the public, infected by the sincere laughter of the drunken Syusin, guffaws along with him.
“I’ll wager he’d like his freedom!” winks at the lion a fellow reeking of paint and covered in multicolored greasy stains.
“Not likely! Let him out and he’ll come running right back to his cage. He’s made his peace. Ho-ho-ho... Time to die, lion, that’s what! What’s the use, brother, of, well... dragging it out? You ought to just up and croak! There’s nothing to wait for! What are you staring at? I’m telling you the truth!”
Syusin leads the public to the next cage, where a wildcat thrashes and beats itself against the bars.
“The wildcat! Ancestor of our tabbies and toms! Not even three months since she was caught and put in this cage. She hisses, she thrashes, her eyes flash, she won’t let anyone come near. Day and night she claws at the bars: looking for a way out! She’d give a million, half her life, her own children, just to get home now. Ho-ho-ho... Well, what are you thrashing about for, you fool? What are you darting around for? You’re not getting out of here! You’ll die first, you won’t get out! And what’s more, you’ll get used to it, you’ll make your peace! And not only that, you’ll lick the hands of us, your tormentors! Ho-ho-ho... Here, brother, it’s the very same hell of Dante’s: abandon all hope!”
Syusin’s cynicism is beginning, little by little, to irritate the public.
“I don’t see what’s so funny about it!” remarks someone’s bass voice.
“He bares his teeth and doesn’t even know what he’s so glad about...” says the house-painter.
“This is a monkey!” Syusin goes on, moving to the next cage. “A rotten animal! I know for a fact he hates us, he’d love, I think, to tear us to pieces, and yet he smiles, he licks your hand! A lackey’s nature! Ho-ho-ho... For a little piece of sugar he’ll bow at his tormentor’s feet and play the fool... I don’t care for that sort!.. But now this, I recommend, a gazelle!” says Syusin, leading the public to a cage where sits a small, thin gazelle with large, tear-stained eyes. “This one’s already done for! She’s hardly had time to land in a cage before the outcome’s already settled: consumption in the final stage! Ho-ho-ho... Just look: her eyes are entirely human – weeping! And it’s understandable. Young, beautiful... she wants to live! She ought to be out there now, free, leaping about and rubbing noses with handsome fellows, and instead she’s here on dirty straw, where it reeks of dog and stable. Strange: she’s dying, and yet there’s still hope in her eyes! What youth means! eh? Quite the business, you young ones! It’s in vain that you hope, my dear! You’ll stretch out your little legs still hoping. Ho-ho-ho...”
“You, brother, well... don’t torment her with words...” says the house-painter, frowning. “It’s eerie!”
The public no longer laughs. Only Syusin himself chuckles and snorts. The gloomier the public grows, the louder and sharper his laughter. And for some reason everyone begins to notice that he is hideous, filthy, cynical; hatred and malice appear in every pair of eyes.
“And now here’s the crane himself!” Syusin persists, going up to the crane standing near one of the cages. “Born in Russia, wintered on the Nile, where he conversed with crocodiles and tigers. His past is the most brilliant imaginable... Look: he’s fallen into thought, he’s concentrating! So absorbed in his thoughts he notices nothing... Dreams, dreams! Ho-ho-ho... ‘There now,’ he thinks, ‘I’ll peck through everyone’s heads, fly out the little window and – off into the blue, into the heavenly azure! And in the blue right now strings of cranes are flying off to warm lands, and krrr... krrr... krrr...’ Oh, look: his feathers have stood on end! That means that in the very height of his dreaming he’s remembered that his wings are clipped, and... horror has seized him, despair. Ho-ho-ho... An irreconcilable nature. His feathers will stand on end just like that forever, right up to his dying gasp. Irreconcilable, proud! And we, brother crane, don’t care a whit that you’re irreconcilable! You’re proud, irreconcilable, and yet here I am, I’ll take you by the nose in front of the whole public whenever I please. Ho-ho-ho...”
Syusin takes the crane by the beak and leads him about.
“Stop tormenting him!” voices are heard. “Leave him be! What the devil is this! Where’s the owner? How can they let a drunk man... torment the animals!”
“Ho-ho-ho... And how exactly am I tormenting them?..”
“With that... with this, all these... jokes of yours... Stop it!”
“But you yourselves asked me for psychology!.. Ho-ho-ho...”
The public recalls that it was for “psychology” alone that it came to the menagerie, that it had waited impatiently for the drunken Syusin to emerge from his little booth and begin his explanations, and so, to justify its anger with something, it begins to find fault with the poor feeding, the cramped cages, and so on.
“We feed them,” says Syusin, squinting mockingly at the public. “Why, there’s even going to be a feeding right now... if you please!”
Shrugging his shoulders, he reaches under the counter and pulls a small boa constrictor out from its warmed blankets.
“We feed them... Can’t be helped! They’re actors too, the same as anyone: don’t feed them – they’ll croak! Monsieur Rabbit, venez ici! \come here (French venez ici)\ If you please!”
Onto the stage appears a white, red-eyed rabbit.
“My compliments!” says Syusin, gesturing with his fingers in front of the rabbit’s little snout. “The honor of an introduction! May I present Monsieur Boa, who wishes to eat you up! Ho-ho-ho... Not pleasant, brother? Wincing? Well, there’s nothing to be done about it! It’s not my fault! If not today, then tomorrow... if not me, then someone else... it’s all the same. Philosophy, brother rabbit! Right now you’re alive, sniffing the air, thinking, and in a minute you’ll be a shapeless mass! If you please. And life, brother, is so fine! Lord, how fine it is!”
“No feeding needed!” voices are heard. “Enough of that! Don’t do it!”
“A shame!” Syusin goes on, as though not hearing the murmur of the public. “A person, an individual, a whole life... has a little wife, little children, and... and suddenly right now – gulp! If you please. It’s a pity, but what’s to be done!”
Syusin takes the rabbit and, laughing, sets it before the boa’s open jaws. But before the rabbit has time to freeze in terror, dozens of hands snatch it away. Exclamations are heard from the public invoking the society for the protection of animals. There is an uproar, hands waving, stamping. Syusin, laughing, runs off to his little booth.
The public leaves the menagerie in a foul mood. It feels sick, as though it had swallowed a fly. But a day or two passes, and the mollified regulars of the menagerie begin to feel drawn to Syusin again, as to vodka or tobacco. They find themselves longing once more for his provoking cynicism, the kind that sends a cold shiver down the spine.
