Marriage Ten or Fifteen Years On

Headnote

1 This 1885 sketch is a brief satirical dialogue-scene, part of the rapid-fire comic journalism Chekhov produced for the weekly humor magazines early in his career. Its premise is a mock prophecy: if match-making bureaus and credit economies keep "improving" the way everything else does, marriage in ten or fifteen years will be reduced to an openly commercial transaction, brokered by a "commission agent" the way a dowry-house or an insurance policy might be. The elderly, debt-ridden bachelor for whom Balalaikin negotiates is never seen – only itemized, in the language of credit and default, as a man whose chief talent is borrowing money he has no intention of repaying and eluding his creditors in doorways. The young lady’s closing cry of love, arriving moments after a haggled-down dowry and a signed receipt, is the sketch’s final ironic stroke.

2 The piece belongs to a small cluster of Chekhov’s early "society of the future" sketches that use a mock-utopian frame to needle contemporary marriage-market customs – arranged matches, dowry negotiation, the genteel fiction that romance and finance are separate matters.

In this world everything is being perfected: Swedish matches, operettas, locomotives, Depré wines, and human relations. Marriage too is being perfected. What it once was and what it is now, you know. What it will be in ten or fifteen years, when our children have grown up, is not hard to guess. Here, then, is the scheme of the romances of that near future.
In the drawing room sits a young lady of twenty or twenty-five. She is dressed in the latest fashion: she sits on three chairs at once, one chair occupied by herself and the other two by her bustle. On her bosom a brooch the size of a good frying pan. Her coiffure, as befits an educated young lady, is modest: two or three poods of hair combed upward, with a little ladder set in the hair for the maid who does the combing. On the piano lies the young lady’s hat. On the hat an artfully made turkey sits on her eggs, in natural size.
A ring. A young man enters, in a red tailcoat, narrow trousers, and enormous shoes resembling skis.
“I have the honor to introduce myself,” says the young man, bowing and scraping before the young lady, “assistant to a sworn attorney, Balalaikin!”
“Delighted... How may I be of use?”
“I have been directed to you by the ’Society for the Contracting of Happy Marriages.”’
“Delighted... Do sit down!”
Balalaikin sits and says:
“`The Society’ pointed me toward several brides, but I think that your terms will suit me best. From this note, given me by the secretary of the ’Society,’ it appears that you bring your husband a house on the Plyushchikha, forty thousand in cash, and some five thousand more in movable property... Is that correct?”
“No... only twenty thousand comes with me,” the young lady coquettes.
“In that case, madam, I beg your pardon... forgive the disturbance... I have the honor to take my leave...”
“No, no... I was joking!” laughs the young lady. “Everything in your note is correct... The money, the house, and the movables... In the ’Society’ they surely told you that the repairs to the house will be at the husband’s expense... and... and... – I am terribly shy! – and that the husband does not receive all the money at once, but in installments over three years...”
“No, madam,” sighs Balalaikin, “nowadays no one marries on installments! If you insist so on installments, then very well, I shall allow you a year...”
The young lady and Balalaikin begin to haggle. The young lady in the end gives way and contents herself with a year’s installment.
“Now allow me to learn your terms!” she says. “How old are you? Where do you serve?”
“Properly speaking, I am not marrying myself, but acting on behalf of my client... I am a commission agent...”
“But I asked the ’Society’ not to send me commission agents!” the young lady takes offense.
“Do not be angry, madam... My client is an elderly man, suffering from rheumatism, of a damp constitution... He has no strength to go about calling on brides and troubling himself over it, so that volens-nolens willy-nilly (Lat.). he must act through a third party. But do not concern yourself, I shall not charge dearly...”
“Your client’s terms?”
“My client is a man of fifty-two... Despite such an age, he still has people who lend him money. Thus, he has two tailors who sew for him on credit. At the shops they let him have as much as he likes on his account. No one can better slip away from cabbies into a courtyard gateway than he. I shall not expatiate on the praise of his resourcefulness – suffice it to say, for a full picture, that he even contrives to run up credit at the chemist’s.”
“He lives on loans alone?”
“Loans are his chief occupation. But, being of a broad nature, not a narrow one, he does not content himself with that activity alone... Without exaggeration one may say that no one passes off a counterfeit coupon better than he... Besides, he serves as guardian to his niece, which brings him some three thousand a year... Further, at the theaters he passes himself off as a reviewer, and in this way gets free suppers and passes from the actors... Twice he has been tried for embezzlement, and he is still under trial for forgery...”
“Does a court still exist?”
“Yes, as a remnant of a medieval morality not quite yet extinct... But one may hope, madam, that a year or two more will pass, and cultured man will part with this outdated ceremony as well... So what answer shall I convey to my client?”
“Tell him I shall think it over...”
“What is there to think over, madam? I do not presume to advise you, but, wishing you well, I cannot help expressing my astonishment... A man of decency, brilliant in every respect, and... and suddenly you do not agree at once, knowing how ruinous delay may be for you. For while you are thinking, he will come to an arrangement with another bride!”
“That is true... In that case I agree...”
“High time, too! Will you allow me to receive a deposit from you?”
The young lady gives the commission agent ten or twenty roubles. He takes it, bows and scrapes, and goes toward the door.
“And the receipt?” the young lady stops him.
“Mille pardons, A thousand pardons (Fr.) madam! I quite forgot! Ha-ha...”
– Mille pardons,
Balalaikin writes out a receipt, bows once more, and departs, while the young lady covers her face and falls upon the sofa.
“How happy I am!” she exclaims, seized by a new feeling hitherto unknown to her. “How happy I am! I... love and am loved!!”
The end. Such is the wedding of the near future. And was it so long ago, reader, that brides walked about in crinolines, and bridegrooms sported striped trousers and tailcoats with a spark to them? Was it so long ago that a bridegroom, before falling in love with his bride, had first to speak with her papa and mamma?
Nightingales, roses, moonlit nights, fragrant little notes, romances... all that has receded far, far away... To whisper in dark little lanes, to suffer, to yearn for a first kiss and so on, is now as untimely as dressing in armor and abducting Sabine women. Everything is being perfected!
