The Foolish Frenchman

Headnote

"The Foolish Frenchman" (1885) is one of Chekhov’s small comic set pieces from his Antosha Chekhonte years, built on a single culture-clash gag: a French circus clown, Henri Pourquoi, breakfasts at Testov’s – a real and famous Moscow tavern renowned for its blini – and watches in mounting horror as the Russian gentleman at the next table works through course after course of blini, caviar, and balyk. Certain the man must be trying to eat himself to death, Pourquoi finally intervenes to save him, only to be told, with total unconcern, that this is simply breakfast. The joke turns entirely on scale and appetite: Russian abundance read by a foreign eye as pathology.

The piece is slight but precisely staged – Chekhov times the mountain of blini shrinking course by course against the clown’s rising alarm, and closes on Pourquoi’s bewildered exit line about a land where even stomachs work miracles.

A clown from the Ginz Brothers’ circus, Henri Pourquoi, stopped in at Testov’s tavern in Moscow to have breakfast.
"Give me a consommé!" he ordered the waiter.
"Will you have it with a poached egg, or without?"
"No, with a poached egg it’s too filling... Two or three croutons, perhaps, give me those..."
While waiting for the consommé to be brought, Pourquoi occupied himself with observing his surroundings. The first thing that caught his eye was a stout, respectable-looking gentleman sitting at the next table, preparing to eat blini.
"How much they do serve in Russian restaurants!" thought the Frenchman, watching his neighbor pour hot butter over his blini. "Five blini! Can one man really eat so much dough?"
Meanwhile the neighbor smeared the blini with caviar, cut them all into halves, and swallowed them in less than five minutes...
"Waiter!" he turned to the servant. "Bring another portion! And what sort of portions are these anyway? Bring ten or fifteen at once! And give me some balyk... salmon, perhaps?"
"Strange..." thought Pourquoi, studying his neighbor. "He’s eaten five pieces of dough and is asking for more! Though such phenomena are not so rare... I myself had an uncle François in Brittany who, on a wager, once ate two plates of soup and five mutton cutlets... They say there are also illnesses in which one eats a great deal..."
The waiter set before the neighbor a mountain of blini and two plates, one of balyk and one of salmon. The respectable gentleman drank a glass of vodka, took a bite of salmon, and set to work on the blini. To Pourquoi’s great astonishment, he ate them hurriedly, barely chewing, like a starving man...
"Clearly he is ill..." thought the Frenchman. "Can he really, strange fellow, imagine he’ll eat the whole mountain? He won’t get through three pieces before his stomach is full, and yet he’ll have to pay for the whole mountain!"
"Give me more caviar!" cried the neighbor, wiping his greasy lips with his napkin. "And don’t forget the green onion!"
"But... why, half the mountain is already gone!" the clown was horrified. "My God, has he eaten all the salmon too? This is even unnatural... Can the human stomach really stretch so far? It cannot be! However elastic a stomach may be, it cannot stretch beyond the limits of the belly... Were this gentleman in France, they would put him on show for money... Good God, the mountain is gone already!"
"Bring a bottle of Nuits..." said the neighbor, receiving caviar and onion from the waiter. "Only warm it first... What else? Perhaps give me another portion of blini... Only be quick about it..."
"Very good, sir... And what will you have after the blini?"
"Something lighter... Order a portion of sturgeon solyanka, Russian style, and... and... I’ll think about it, go on!"
"Perhaps I am dreaming?" the clown marveled, leaning back against his chair. "This man wants to die! One cannot eat such a quantity with impunity! Yes, yes, he wants to die. It shows in his sorrowful face. And can it be that the staff do not find it suspicious that he eats so much? It cannot be!"
Pourquoi called over the waiter who was serving the neighboring table, and asked in a whisper:
"Listen, why do you bring him so much?"
"Why, er... er... he demands it, sir! How could we not bring it, sir?" the waiter said, astonished.
"Strange, but he might sit here demanding food until evening in this fashion! If you yourselves lack the courage to refuse him, then report it to the maître d’hôtel, call the police!"
The waiter smirked, shrugged his shoulders, and walked away.
"Savages!" the Frenchman fumed inwardly. "They’re even glad to have a madman, a suicide, sitting at their table who might eat an extra ruble’s worth! It’s nothing that the man will die, so long as there’s takings!"
"These arrangements, I must say!" grumbled the neighbor, turning to the Frenchman. "These long intermissions irritate me terribly! Between one portion and the next you must wait half an hour! At this rate one’s appetite will go to the devil, and one will be late besides... It’s three o’clock now, and I must be at a jubilee dinner by five."
"Pardon, monsieur, Excuse me (French) – " Pourquoi turned pale, "but you are already dining!"
– Pardon, monsieur,
"No-o... What sort of dinner is this? This is breakfast... blini..."
At this the solyanka was brought to the neighbor. He poured himself a full plate, peppered it with cayenne, and began to slurp it down...
"Poor fellow..." the Frenchman went on being horrified. "Either he is ill and does not notice his dangerous condition, or else he is doing all this on purpose... with the aim of suicide... My God, had I known I would stumble upon such a spectacle here, I would never have come! My nerves cannot bear such scenes!"
And the Frenchman went on regarding his neighbor’s face with pity, expecting at any moment that convulsions would seize him, such as always afflicted Uncle François after a dangerous wager...
"He appears to be an educated man, young... full of strength..." he thought, looking at his neighbor. "Perhaps he is of use to his fatherland... and it is quite possible he has a young wife, children... Judging by his dress, he must be wealthy, contented... but what then drives him to take such a step?.. And can it be he could find no other way to die? The devil knows how cheaply life is valued here! And how base, how inhuman I am, sitting here and not going to his aid! Perhaps he can still be saved!"
Pourquoi rose resolutely from his table and went over to his neighbor.
"Listen, monsieur," he addressed him in a soft, ingratiating voice. "I have not the honor of being acquainted with you, but nevertheless, believe me, I am your friend... Might I not help you in some way? Remember, you are still young... you have a wife, children..."
"I don’t understand you!" the neighbor shook his head, staring wide-eyed at the Frenchman.
"Ah, why dissemble, monsieur? I see it perfectly well! You eat so much that... it is hard not to suspect..."
"I eat a great deal?!" the neighbor was astonished. "I?! Come now... How can I help eating, when I’ve had nothing since morning?"
"But you eat a terrible amount!"
"Well, it’s not you who has to pay! Why do you trouble yourself? And I don’t eat much at all! Look, I eat like everyone else!"
Pourquoi looked about him and was horrified. Waiters, jostling and colliding with one another, were carrying whole mountains of blini... At the tables sat people devouring mountains of blini, salmon, caviar... with the very same appetite and fearlessness as the respectable gentleman.
"Oh, land of wonders!" thought Pourquoi, walking out of the restaurant. "Not only the climate but even the stomachs work miracles here! Oh land, marvelous land!"
