Goose Talk

Гусиный разговор

Headnote

"Goose Talk" ("Гусиный разговор") appeared in 1884, deep in Chekhov’s Antosha Chekhonte years, when he was filing sketches, parodies, and comic miniatures to the Moscow humor weeklies at a pace that would be unthinkable for the mature writer. This one is a fable in miniature: a flock of wild geese crossing the sky splits generationally, the old "state councillors" up front setting the pace, the young ganders trailing behind and grumbling that the elders fly too slowly and lead them nowhere worth going.

The joke turns on borrowed officialdom. Chekhov dresses the geese in the language of the Table of Ranks and the bureaucracy he knew from the inside — "state councillor, your excellency," a secretary taking down the names of malcontents — and lets the birds argue politics with the gravity of a ministry meeting. The old guard’s counter-argument is a small satire of its own: an ode to the tame, "domestic" goose’s comfortable, unfree life, complete with a mock-heroic aside about geese saving Rome (the Capitoline geese of Roman legend), undercut at once by a young voice who points out exactly what that comfortable domestic goose is fattened for.

Nothing resolves. The flock reaches its destination without incident, pauses briefly for an old-timer’s flirtation with a barnyard goose who takes his money and declines his advances, and the piece ends on that small, deflating anticlimax rather than a moral. It is very much an early Chekhonte piece — quick, topical, built for the one absurdist premise sustained gag by gag — but the animal-fable device (bureaucratic hierarchy read onto migrating birds) anticipates the sharper class and generational satire of his more developed 1880s work.
