The Chameleon

Хамелеон

Headnote

"The Chameleon" ("Хамелеон") appeared in 1884, one of the sharpest of Chekhov’s Antosha Chekhonte pieces from the years he was writing at speed for the comic weeklies while finishing his medical degree. It is built on a single mechanism, wound tight and let run: a police superintendent, Ochumelov, is called to adjudicate a dog bite in a market square, and his verdict on the dog – stray mongrel to be destroyed, or valuable pet to be coddled – flips each time a new rumor arrives about whose animal it might be. If it belongs to nobody, the dog is vicious and the victim deserving of damages; if it might belong to the General, the dog is delicate and the victim a liar and a fraud. Ochumelov never notices, or lets on that he notices, that he has reversed himself; the coat he keeps having taken off and put back on tracks his temperature exactly as his opinions do.

The title has passed into Russian as a byword for this kind of reflexive, appetite-driven flattery, and the story is often read as a compact anatomy of provincial bureaucracy under autocracy – petty authority calibrated entirely to power rather than to fact or law. Chekhov does not comment on this directly; he lets the crowd’s shifting identifications of the dog’s owner do the work, and lets Ochumelov’s own words – confident in each direction, contradicting the last statement without noticing – carry the entire judgment. The victim, Khryukin, is never vindicated or refuted; he is simply left holding his bitten finger while the joke closes around him.

What to watch for is the mechanism’s precision: each rumor produces an exact, proportionate reversal, and the greatcoat business is timed to each swing. The dog itself, trembling and uncomprehending throughout, is the one figure in the scene who does not perform.
