Headnote
Ladies and Gentlemen, Townsfolk (Господа обыватели), subtitled “a play in two acts,” appeared in 1884, deep in the Antosha Chekhonte years, when Chekhov was filing comic sketches by the dozen to the Moscow humor weeklies while finishing his medical degree. It is less a play than a playlet – a rapid burlesque of provincial civic life, built almost entirely out of dialogue and stage direction, with no narrator to soften or explain a single line.
The target is the gorodskaya uprava, the town council, and the petty theater of municipal graft that Chekhov had watched up close in Taganrog and Moscow alike: a fire chief who turns a routine budget item into a florid speech about duty, mortality, and the shame of Russia before “foreigners”; a mayor who dismisses the matter with a shrug and an interrupted digression; councilmen who vote by acclamation without appearing to listen. The satire has a double edge. Fire Chief Semyon Vavilych is at once the play’s chief hypocrite – inflating a builder’s markup into patriotic anguish – and, by Act Two, revealed as genuinely unfit for the post he has just finagled more money to hold: when an actual fire breaks out at the sawmill yard, his men have all wandered off on private errands, and he himself dawdles to dress while the town burns.
The piece is built for speed, in the manner of the early comic squibs: broad types (the mayor, the fire chief, the fire chief’s wife eavesdropping and gossiping in the gallery, the sentry) delivering lines that talk past one another as much as to one another – the councilmen answer with a unanimous vote rather than an argument, the fire chief’s wife worries about a card-game loss in the same breath as her husband’s health. Watch for the running joke of the “watchtower” (kalancha) as an object of civic obsession disproportionate to its use, and for the closing line, which lands the whole burlesque’s verdict without a word of commentary: ordered to save the town from an actual blaze, the fire chief’s last thought is his uniform.
