Even the Beautiful Must Have Its Limits

И прекрасное должно иметь пределы

Headnote

"Even the Beautiful Must Have Its Limits" ("И прекрасное должно иметь пределы") appeared in 1884, in the thick of the Antosha Chekhonte years, when Chekhov was turning out comic sketches for the humor weeklies at a pace that supported his family and his medical studies at once. It belongs to a favorite Chekhonte device: the found document. A frame – a notebook left behind by a "thoughtful collegiate registrar, who died last year of fright" – licenses a string of unrelated anecdotes, each one a small syllogism run to its absurd conclusion.

The joke is structural before it is verbal. A mock-philosophical premise ("not only evil, but even the beautiful, must have its limits") is stated with the gravity of a moral essay, then "proved" by three escalating examples: rich food causing indigestion, deferential hat-doffing causing a fatal chill, and – the piece’s set-piece – a fussily precise feldsher who washes, dresses, brushes his coat, winds his watch, sews on a button, and prays before he will hurry to a patient who is, he has just been told, bleeding to death. The comedy is entirely in the gap between the narrator’s solemn tone and the triviality (or horror) of what it describes; Chekhov never once breaks frame to tell the reader it is funny, or awful, or both.

Two touches are worth watching for. First, the feldsher scene is a recognizable early sketch for the clinical, unhurried attention to professional ritual that recurs across Chekhov’s medical fiction – though here it serves pure farce, not the later tenderness. Second, the final line turns the joke on the narrator himself: having condemned excessive writing, he breaks off because his own caretaker is eyeing him suspiciously through the window – a wink at the censor-conscious humor-magazine trade Chekhov was himself working in.
