Small Fry
Мелюзга
Headnote
"Small Fry" (1884) follows a minor clerk, Nevyrazimov, through an Easter-eve night shift, brooding over petty slights and a general’s theft while the church bells ring out the resurrection outside. It is an early instance of a mode Chekhov would return to throughout his career: the small, put-upon official whose private resentments are comically disproportionate to his station, set against a backdrop of festive indifference.
