My Domostroy

Headnote

1 "My Domostroy" (1886) is a short comic sketch whose title alludes to the historical Domostroy, a 16th-century Russian conduct book that laid down strict, patriarchal rules for running a household – how a husband should manage his wife, children, and servants, discipline them, and extract obedience and labor from them. Chekhov borrows the form of household "rules" and turns it into a burlesque monologue: an unnamed writer-narrator describes, with mounting self-satisfaction, the absurd tyranny he supposedly exercises over his mother-in-law, wife, and sister-in-law, who greet him each morning like a potentate, praise his literary "genius" in stage-whispers meant to be overheard, dance for his amusement, and fan the flies from him as he naps.

2 The humor works two ways at once. On the surface it is a send-up of the petty domestic despot, a stock comic type of the period’s satirical press, exaggerated to the point of absurdity (rabies-inoculated mothers-in-law, punishments of hopping on one foot). But it also mocks literary vanity: the narrator’s tyranny is inseparable from his identity as a writer – his household exists to copy his manuscripts, fetch his fees, and flatter his "works," and the piece closes with his family standing guard through the night not over him but over his writings. The story belongs to Chekhov’s early Fragments-period sketches (published under a pseudonym in the popular comic press) and trades in the broad caricature typical of that market rather than in the psychological realism of his mature fiction.

In the morning, when I rise from sleep and stand before the mirror putting on my necktie, my mother-in-law, my wife, and my sister-in-law come in to me quietly and decorously. They line up in a row and, smiling respectfully, wish me a good morning. I nod to them and deliver a speech in which I explain to them that the head of this house is I.
"I feed you, water you, and instruct you, you rascals," I tell them, "I teach you blockheads sense, and therefore you are obliged to respect me, to honor me, to tremble before me, to be enraptured by my works, and not to step outside the bounds of obedience by so much as a millimeter – otherwise... Oh, a hundred devils and one witch, you know me! I’ll bend you like a ram’s horn! I’ll show you where the crayfish spend the winter! etc., etc."
Having heard out my speech, the womenfolk of the household withdraw and set to their tasks. My mother-in-law and my wife run off to the editorial offices with articles: my wife to the Alarm Clock, my mother-in-law to News of the Day, to Lipskerov’s. My sister-in-law sits down to make fair copies of my feuilletons, tales, and treatises. I send my mother-in-law to collect the fee. If the publisher is slow to pay, if he tries to fob her off with "breakfasts," then before sending her for the money I feed my mother-in-law nothing but raw meat for three days, provoke her to a fury, and instill in her an unconquerable hatred of the whole publishing tribe; and she, red-faced, ferocious, seething, goes off to collect – and there has never yet been a case of her coming back empty-handed. It likewise falls to her to guard my person from the persistence of creditors. If there are too many creditors and they keep me from sleeping, I inoculate my mother-in-law with rabies by Pasteur’s method and station her at the door: not a single rogue will dare come near!
At dinner, when I am regaling myself with cabbage soup and goose with cabbage, my wife sits at the piano and plays for me selections from Boccaccio, La Belle Hélène, and The Bells of Corneville, while my mother-in-law and sister-in-law dance a kachucha around the table. To whichever of them pleases me most I promise to give a copy of my own book with the author’s facsimile signature – and I never keep the promise, since the lucky one invariably does something that very same day to bring my wrath down upon her and so forfeits her right to the reward. After dinner, as I take my ease on the divan, spreading the aroma of a cigar about me, my sister-in-law reads my works aloud while my mother-in-law and my wife listen.
"Ah, how splendid!" they are obliged to exclaim. "Magnificent! What depth of thought! What an ocean of feeling! Delightful!"
When I begin to doze, they move off to one side and whisper – loudly enough that I can still hear:
"What a talent! No, truly, an extraordinary talent! How much humanity loses by not troubling to understand him! But how fortunate we are, we insignificant creatures, to live under the same roof as such a genius!"
If I fall asleep, whoever is on duty sits at my pillow and fans the flies away from me.
When I wake, I shout:
"Blockheads, tea!"
But the tea is already prepared. They bring it to me and offer it with a bow, saying:
"Partake, father and benefactor! Here is jam, here is a pretzel-loaf... Accept from us this humble offering..."
After tea I generally administer punishments for offenses against the good order of the household. If there are no offenses, the punishment is credited toward some future one. The severity of the punishment corresponds to the magnitude of the offense.
Thus, if I am displeased with the fair copying, or with the kachucha, or with the jam, the guilty party is required to learn by heart several scenes from a play of merchant life, to hop on one foot through every room in the house, and to go collect my fee from an editorial office I do not even write for. In cases of disobedience or the expression of displeasure I resort to sterner measures: I lock the offender in the closet, give her smelling salts to sniff, and so on. And if my mother-in-law begins to rage, I send for the policeman and the caretaker.
At night, while I sleep, all three of my womenfolk stay awake, walking through the rooms and standing guard, lest thieves come and steal my works.
