1 Youths and maidens!
2 Three years ago I felt the presence of that sacred flame for which
Prometheus was chained to his rock... And so for three years, with a generous hand, I have been dispatching to every corner of my vast fatherland my works, passed through the purgatory of the aforementioned flame. I wrote in prose, I wrote in verse, I wrote in every meter, manner, and measure, for nothing and for money, I wrote to every journal, but... alas!!!... my envious rivals saw fit not to print my works, or if to print them, then only ever in the "letters box." Half a hundred postage stamps I sowed upon
The Cornfield, a hundred I drowned in the
Neva, some ten I scorched on the
Little Flame, five hundred I squandered on the
Dragonfly. In short: of all the answers from all the editorial offices, I have received, from the very start of my literary career to this day, exactly two thousand! Yesterday I received the last of them, similar in content to all the rest. In not one answer was there even a hint of "yes." Youths and maidens! The material side of each of my submissions to an editorial office cost me, at the very least, ten kopecks; consequently, on the literary passage of time I have squandered two hundred rubles. And for two hundred rubles one could buy a horse! My income for the year comes to eight hundred francs, only... Understand me!!! And I had to go hungry for having sung of nature, of love, of women’s eyes, for having loosed poisoned arrows at the greed of
haughty Albion; for having shared my flame with... the gentlemen who wrote me their answers... Two thousand answers – two hundred-odd rubles, and not one "yes"! Pah! and withal an instructive matter. Youths and maidens! I celebrate today my jubilee of receiving the two-thousandth answer, I raise a glass to the conclusion of my literary career, and I rest upon my laurels. Either point me to another who in three years received as many "no"s, or set me upon an unshakeable pedestal!

4 A THOUSAND AND ONE PASSIONS, OR A TERRIBLE NIGHT
5 (A novel in one part with an epilogue)
7 On the tower of St. One Hundred and Forty-Six Martyrs, midnight struck. I trembled. The hour had come. I convulsively seized
Theodore by the arm and went out with him into the street. The sky was dark as printer’s ink. It was dark as inside a hat pulled over one’s head. A dark night – that is a day inside a walnut shell. We wrapped ourselves in our cloaks and set off. A strong wind blew straight through us. Rain and snow – those wet brothers – beat cruelly against our faces. Lightning, despite the winter season, furrowed the sky in every direction. Thunder, that grim, majestic companion of the lightning, lovely as the blink of blue eyes, swift as thought, shook the air with terror. Theodore’s ears glowed with electricity.
The fires of St. Elmo flew crackling over our heads. I looked up. I shuddered. Who does not shudder before the majesty of nature? Across the sky flew several brilliant meteors. I began to count them and counted twenty-eight. I pointed them out to Theodore.
8 "An ill omen!" he muttered, pale as a statue carved from Carrara marble.
9 The wind groaned, howled, sobbed... The groan of the wind is the groan of a conscience drowned in terrible crimes. Near us the thunder demolished and set fire to an eight-story house. I heard screams flying out of it. We walked past. What was a burning house to me, when in my own breast a hundred and fifty houses were burning? Somewhere in space a bell tolled, mournful, slow, monotonous. It was a battle of the elements. Some unknown forces, it seemed, were laboring over the terrible harmony of the elements. Who are these forces? Will man ever come to know them?
10 A timid, yet audacious dream!!!
11 We shouted for a cab. We got into the carriage and sped off. A
cabman is the brother of the wind. We flew as a bold thought flies through the mysterious convolutions of the brain. I thrust into the cabman’s hand a purse of gold. Gold helped the whip double the speed of the horses’ legs.
12 "Antonio, where are you taking me?" groaned Theodore. "You look like an evil genius... In your black eyes hell itself is glowing... I am beginning to be afraid..."
13 Pitiful coward!! I said nothing. He loved her. She loved him passionately... I had to kill him, because I loved her more than life. I loved her and hated him. He had to die this terrible night and pay with his death for his love. Within me boiled love and hatred. They were my second being. These two sisters, living within one shell, work devastation: they are spiritual vandals.
14 "Stop!" I said to the cabman, when the carriage rolled up to our destination.
15 Theodore and I leapt out. From behind the clouds the moon glanced down coldly upon us. The moon – an impartial, silent witness of the sweet moments of love and of vengeance. She was to be a witness now to the death of one of us. Before us lay a chasm, a bottomless abyss, like
the barrel of the criminal daughters of Danaus. We stood at the rim of an extinct volcano’s crater. Terrible legends circulate among the people about this volcano. I made a movement with my knee, and Theodore went flying down into the terrible chasm. The mouth of a volcano is the maw of the earth.
16 "A curse!!!" he cried out in answer to my curse.
17 A strong man, hurling his enemy into the crater of a volcano for the sake of a woman’s beautiful eyes – a majestic, grandiose, and instructive picture! Only the lava was lacking!
18 The cabman. The cabman – a statue set up by fate to ignorance. Away with routine! The cabman followed after Theodore. I felt that in my breast there remained only love. I fell face down upon the ground and wept with rapture. Tears of rapture are the result of a divine reaction produced in the depths of a loving heart. The horses neighed merrily. How burdensome it is not to be a man! I freed them from their suffering, animal life. I killed them. Death is both fetters and a release from fetters.
19 I went into the inn of the "Violet Hippopotamus" and drank five glasses of good wine.
20 Three hours after my vengeance I was at the door of her apartment. The dagger, friend of death, had helped me make my way over corpses to her door. I began to listen. She was not asleep. She was dreaming. I listened. She was silent. The silence lasted some four hours. Four hours for a man in love – four nineteenth centuries! At last she called her maid. The maid walked past me. I looked at her demonically. She caught my gaze. Her reason left her. I killed her. Better to die than to live without reason.
21 "Annette!" she cried out. "Why doesn’t Theodore come? Anguish gnaws at my heart. Some heavy foreboding chokes me. Oh, Annette! go for him. He is surely carousing now together with that godless, terrible Antonio!... God, whom do I see?! Antonio!"
22 I went in to her. She turned pale.
23 "Get away!" she cried, and horror distorted her noble, beautiful features.
24 I looked at her. A gaze is the sword of the soul. She staggered. In my gaze she saw everything: both Theodore’s death, and the demonic passion, and a thousand human desires... My bearing was majesty itself. In my eyes shone electricity. My hair stirred and stood on end. She saw before her a demon in earthly form. I saw that she had fallen under my spell. For some four hours the deathly silence and the mutual contemplation continued. Thunder crashed, and she fell upon my breast. A man’s breast is a woman’s fortress. I clasped her in my arms. We both cried out. Her bones cracked. A galvanic current ran through our bodies. A hot kiss...
25 She had fallen in love in me with a demon. I wanted her to fall in love in me with an angel. "A million and a half francs I give to the poor!" I said. She fell in love in me with an angel and wept. I wept too. What tears those were!!! A month later, in the church of St. Titus and Hortensia, a solemn wedding took place. I was wed to her. She was wed to me. The poor gave us their blessing! She entreated me to forgive my enemies, whom I had earlier killed. I forgave them. With my young wife I went off to
America. My young, loving wife was an angel in the virgin forests of America, an angel before whom lions and tigers bowed down. I was a young tiger. Three years after our wedding old Sam already had a curly-headed boy on his hands. The boy looked more like his mother than like me. This vexed me. Yesterday my second son was born... and I myself, from joy, hanged myself... My second little boy holds out his hands to the readers and begs them not to believe his
papa, because his papa never had, not only children, but even a wife. His papa fears marriage as he fears fire. My little boy does not lie. He is an infant. Believe him. Childhood is a holy age. None of this ever happened at all... Good night!
