1 A sultry midday. Not a sound, not a movement in the air... All of nature looks like one very large country estate, forgotten by God and by men. Under the drooping foliage of the old lime tree standing by the quarters of
the prison warden Yanshin, at a little three-legged table, sit Yanshin himself and his guest,
the salaried warden of the district school, Pimfov. Both are without their frock coats; their waistcoats are unbuttoned; their faces are sweaty, red, motionless; their capacity to express anything at all has been paralyzed by the heat... Pimfov’s face has quite curdled and grown bloated with sloth, his eyes have gone glassy, his lower lip hangs loose. In Yanshin’s eyes and on his brow some activity is still to be seen; apparently he is thinking about something... The two look at one another, keep silent, and express their torment by puffing and by slapping their palms at the flies. On the table stand a decanter of vodka, stringy boiled beef, and a sardine tin holding coarse salt. The first, second, and third glasses have already been drunk...
2 "Yes indeed, sir!" Yanshin suddenly lets out, and so unexpectedly that the dog dozing not far from the table gives a start and, tucking its tail, runs off to one side. "Yes indeed! Say what you like, Filipp Maksimych, but there are a great many superfluous punctuation marks in the Russian language!"
3 "That is to say – why so, sir?" Pimfov modestly inquires, extracting a fly’s wing from his glass. "Though there are many marks, each one of them has its own meaning and place."
4 "Come, give that up! Your marks haven’t any meaning at all. Nothing but pedantry... A man plants a dozen commas in a single line and thinks himself clever for it. Take
the deputy prosecutor Merinov, for instance – he sets a comma after every word. What’s that for? ’Dear sir – comma – having visited the prison – comma – on such and such a date – comma – I observed – comma – that the prisoners –’...pah! It makes your eyes swim! And it’s the same in books, too... Semicolons, colons, all sorts of quotation marks. Disgusting even to read. And some dandy, not content with a single period, goes and jabs a whole row of them in... What’s that for?"
5 "Learning demands it..." Pimfov sighs.
6 "Learning... Sheer lunacy, not learning... They invented it for show... to throw dust in people’s eyes... Take that, for instance – not one foreign language has that letter yat, and
Russia has it... What’s it for, I ask you? Write khleb with a yat or without one – isn’t it exactly the same thing?"
7 "God knows what you’re saying,
Ilya Martynych!" Pimfov takes offense. "How can one possibly write khleb with a plain ye? The things people say – it’s unpleasant even to listen to."
8 Pimfov drains his glass and, blinking with offense, turns his face away to one side.
9 "And didn’t they flog me on account of that yat!" Yanshin goes on. "I remember it well – once the teacher calls me up to the blackboard and dictates: ’The doctor has gone to town.’ I went and wrote
lekar with a plain ye. Flogged. A week later, up to the board again, write it again: ’The doctor has gone to town.’ This time I write it with a yat. Flogged again. What for, Ivan Fomich? Have mercy – you yourself said a yat was needed there! ’At that time,’ he says, ’I was in error, but having read yesterday a certain academician’s paper on the yat in the word
lekar, I now agree with the
Academy of Sciences. So I flog you in the line of duty’... Well, and he flogged me. And my
Vasyutka’s ear is always swollen on account of that yat, too... If I were minister I’d forbid the likes of you to addle people’s heads with your yat."
10 "Farewell," Pimfov sighs, blinking his eyes and putting on his frock coat. "I cannot bear to hear talk of learning..."
11 "Now, now, now... taken offense already!" says Yanshin, catching Pimfov by the sleeve. "I only meant it in a manner of speaking... Come, sit down, let’s drink!"
12 The offended Pimfov sits back down, drinks, and turns his face away to one side. A silence falls. Past the drinkers
the cook Feona carries a slop pail. There comes the splash of slops and the yelp of a dog that gets doused. Pimfov’s lifeless face slackens still further; it seems ready to melt from the heat and run down onto his waistcoat. Little wrinkles gather on Yanshin’s brow. He stares fixedly at the stringy beef and thinks... A disabled veteran comes up to the table, glances sullenly at the decanter, and, seeing it empty, brings a fresh round... They drink again.
13 "Yes indeed, sir!" Yanshin suddenly says.
14 Pimfov starts and looks at Yanshin with alarm. He expects fresh heresies from him.
15 "Yes indeed!" Yanshin repeats, gazing pensively at the decanter. "In my opinion, there’s a great deal that’s superfluous in the sciences too!"
16 "That is to say – how do you mean, sir?" Pimfov asks quietly. "Which sciences do you find superfluous?"
17 "All of them... The more sciences a man knows, the more he fancies of himself. More pride in him... I’d hang the lot of these... sciences... Now, now... taken offense again! What a touchy fellow, upon my word, you can’t say a word to him! Sit down, let’s drink!"
18 Feona comes up and, angrily jabbing her plump elbows to either side, sets down before the two friends a bowl of green cabbage soup. Loud slurping and smacking begins. As if sprung from the earth, three dogs and a cat appear. They stand before the table and gaze imploringly at the chewing mouths. The soup is followed by milk kasha, which Feona sets down with such spite that spoons and crusts go flying off the table. Before the kasha the friends silently drink.
19 "Everything in this world is superfluous!" Yanshin suddenly remarks.
20 Pimfov drops his spoon onto his knees, looks at Yanshin in fright, wants to protest, but his tongue has gone weak from the drink and tangled itself in the thick kasha... Instead of his usual "that is to say, how do you mean, sir?" there comes only a mumble.
21 "Everything’s superfluous..." Yanshin goes on. "Sciences, and people... and prison institutions, and flies... and kasha... And you’re superfluous... Even though you’re a good man, and you believe in God, you’re superfluous too..."
22 "Farewell, Ilya Martynych!" Pimfov babbles, struggling to put on his frock coat and unable to find the sleeves.
23 "Here we’ve just been stuffing and gorging ourselves – and what for? Just so... It’s all superfluous... We eat and don’t even know why ourselves... Now, now... taken offense again! I only meant it that way... just for the sake of talking! And where would you go? Let’s sit a while, have a chat... a drink!"
24 A silence falls, broken now and then only by the clink of glasses and drunken grunting... The sun has already begun to sink toward the west, and the lime tree’s shadow keeps growing and growing. Feona comes, and, snorting, waving her arms sharply, spreads a rug out by the table. The friends silently drink their last round, settle themselves on the rug, and, turning their backs to one another, begin to fall asleep...
25 "Thank God," Pimfov thinks, "today he didn’t get as far as the creation of the world and the church hierarchy, or else it would have been enough to make your hair stand on end, saints preserve us..."
