1 "Who goes there?"
2 There is no answer. The watchman sees nothing, but through the noise of the wind and the trees he clearly hears someone walking ahead of him along the avenue. The March night, cloudy and misty, has wrapped the earth, and it seems to
the watchman that the earth, the sky, and he himself with all his thoughts have merged into one huge, impenetrably black thing. One can only feel one’s way.
3 "Who goes there?" the watchman repeats, and it begins to seem to him that he hears both a whisper and suppressed laughter. "Who’s there?"
4 "It’s me, father..." answers an old man’s voice.
5 "Yes, but who are you?"
6 "I... a passer-by."
7 "What sort of passer-by?" the watchman shouts angrily, wishing to mask his fear with the shout. "What ill wind brings you here! Dragging yourself about the graveyard at night, you
wood-goblin!"
8 "Is this really the graveyard?"
9 "What else would it be? The graveyard, to be sure! Can’t you see?"
10 "O-ho-ho-hh... Queen of Heaven!" comes an old man’s sigh. "I see nothing, father, nothing... My, what darkness, what darkness. Can’t see your hand before your face, such darkness, father! Oh-ho-ho-hhh..."
11 "But who are you, then?"
12 "I am a
wanderer, father, a strange man."
– Я –
13 "Devils, that’s what you are, night-prowlers... Wanderers too! Drunkards..." mutters the watchman, reassured by the passer-by’s tone and sighs. "One sins along with the likes of you! Drinking all the day long, and then at night the ill wind carries them about. And it seemed to me I’d heard there wasn’t just one of you here, but as if there were two or three."
14 "One, father, one. Just the one, as I live... O-ho-ho-h, our sins..."
15 The watchman stumbles against the man and stops.
16 "How did you get in here?" he asks.
17 "Lost my way, good man. I was going to Mitrievsky’s mill and lost my way."
18 "Well now! Is this really the road to Mitrievsky’s mill? What a sheep’s-head you are! To get to Mitrievsky’s mill you must go much further to the left, straight out of town along the government road. Drunk as you were, you must have gone three extra
versts out of your way. I suppose you got yourself soused in town?"
19 "There was sin in it, father, there was... Truly, there was, I won’t hide the sin. But how am I to go now?"
20 "Go straight on and on along this avenue until you run into a dead end, and then bear left at once and walk on until you’ve gone the whole length of the graveyard, right up to the little gate. There’ll be a gate there... Unlock it and go with God. Mind you don’t fall into the ditch. And beyond the graveyard walk straight across the field, the field, the field, until you come out on the government road."
21 "God grant you health, father. Save and have mercy, Queen of Heaven! But if only you’d see me there, good man! Be so kind, see me to the gate!"
22 "Well, I’ve time to spare, haven’t I! Go on by yourself!"
23 "Be so kind, make me pray to God for you. I see nothing, can’t see my hand before my face, not a speck of light, father... Such darkness, such darkness! See me there, sir!"
24 "Oh yes, I’ve plenty of time to be seeing folk about! If I were to coddle every one of you, I’d never be done seeing people about."
25 "For
Christ’s sake, see me there. I can’t see, and I’m afraid to walk the graveyard alone. It’s uncanny, father, uncanny, I’m afraid, uncanny, good man."
26 "You’ve fastened yourself onto my neck," sighs the watchman. "Well, all right, let’s go!"
27 The watchman and the passer-by set off. They walk side by side, shoulder to shoulder, and are silent. A damp, piercing wind strikes them full in the face, and invisible trees, rustling and cracking, shower them with heavy spatters of rain... The avenue is almost entirely covered with puddles.
28 "There’s one thing I can’t make out," says the watchman after a long silence, "how did you get in here? The gates are locked. Did you climb over the fence, or what? If it was over the fence, that’s a fine business for an old man to be about – the very worst there is!"
29 "I don’t know, father, I don’t know. How I got in here, I don’t know myself. It’s a delusion. God has punished me. Truly, a delusion, the Evil One led me astray. And you, father, you’re a watchman here, then?"
30 "A watchman."
31 "Alone over the whole graveyard?"
32 The gust of wind is so strong that both of them stop for a moment. The watchman, waiting for the blast to weaken, answers:
33 "There are three of us here, only one’s lying sick with fever, and the other’s asleep. He and I take turns."
34 "So, so, father, so. What a wind, what a wind! I dare say the dead can hear it! It howls like a fierce beast... O-ho-ho-h..."
35 "And where are you from yourself?"
36 "From far away, father. I’m a Vologda man, from a long way off. I go about the holy places and pray for good people. Save and have mercy, O Lord."
37 The watchman stops for a short while to light his pipe. He crouches down behind the passer-by’s back and burns several matches. The light of the first match, flaring up, lights for one instant a stretch of the avenue to the right, a white monument with an angel and a dark cross; the light of the second match, flaring brightly and then going out in the wind, flits like lightning along the left side, and out of the darkness stands out only the corner part of some sort of railing; the third match lights up, both to the right and to the left, the white monument, the dark cross, and a railing around a child’s little grave.
38 "They sleep, the dear departed, they sleep, the dear ones!" mutters the passer-by, sighing loudly. "The rich sleep, and the poor, and the wise, and the foolish, and the kind, and the fierce. To all of them one price. And they’ll sleep until the trumpet’s call. The Kingdom of Heaven to them, eternal rest."
39 "Here we are walking now, but the time will come when we too shall lie down," says the watchman.
40 "So, so. All, all of us shall. There’s no man who won’t die. O-ho-ho-h. Our deeds are fierce, our thoughts are cunning! Sins, sins! My accursed soul, insatiable, my gluttonous belly! I have angered the Lord, and there’ll be no salvation for me, neither in this world nor the next. I’ve sunk into sins like a worm into the earth."
41 "Yes, and one must die."
42 "That’s just it, one must."
43 "A wanderer, I dare say, finds it easier to die than the likes of us..." says the watchman.
44 "Wanderers are of different sorts. There are real ones, who are God-fearing, who guard their souls, and there are those who go blundering about the graveyard at night, making sport for the devils... yes indeed! Another sort of wanderer, if he takes the notion, will crack you over the skull with his axe-handle, and out flies the breath of you."
45 "Why do you say such words?"
46 "Oh, just so... Well, here, it seems, is the little gate. That’s the very one. Open it up, my friend!"
47 The watchman gropes his way and opens the little gate, leads the wanderer out by the sleeve, and says:
48 "Here’s the end of the graveyard. Now walk straight across the field and the field, until you run up against the government road. Only mind, there’ll be a boundary ditch here in a moment, don’t fall in... And when you come out on the road, keep to the right, and so straight on to the mill..."
49 "O-ho-ho-h-h..." sighs the wanderer, having been silent a while. "But now I reason like this, that I’ve no need to go to Mitrievsky’s mill at all... What
the devil would I go there for? I’d rather, sir, stand here a while with you..."
50 "Why should you stand with me?"
51 "Oh, just so... it’s merrier with you..."
52 "There’s a one for you, found himself a merrymaker! A wanderer you are, and yet I see you’re fond of a joke..."
53 "To be sure, I’m fond of it!" says the passer-by, chuckling hoarsely. "Ah, my dear fellow, my good friend! I dare say you’ll long remember the wanderer now!"
54 "Why should I remember you?"
55 "Why, because I’ve got round you so neatly... As if I were a wanderer! I’m no wanderer at all."
56 "Who are you, then?"
57 "A dead man... Just risen from the grave... Remember
the locksmith Gubarev, who hanged himself at
Shrovetide? Well, I’m none other than that same Gubarev..."
58 "Go on, lie some more!"
59 The watchman does not believe him, but feels through his whole body such a heavy, cold fear that he starts from the spot and begins hastily groping for the gate.
60 "Wait, where are you off to?" says the passer-by, seizing him by the arm. "Eh-eh-eh... look at you! And who are you abandoning me to, then?"
61 "Let go!" cries the watchman, trying to tear his arm free.
62 "Sto-op! I order you to stand, so stand... Don’t struggle, you mangy dog! If you want to stay alive, then stand and be silent, as long as I order... It’s only that I don’t care to shed blood, or else you’d have been dead at my hands long ago, you scab... Stand!"
63 The watchman’s knees give way beneath him. In terror he shuts his eyes and, trembling all over, presses himself against the fence. He would like to cry out, but he knows his shout will not carry to any dwelling... The passer-by stands beside him and holds him by the arm... Some three minutes pass in silence.
64 "One’s lying sick with fever, another’s asleep, and the third is seeing wanderers on their way," mutters the passer-by. "Fine watchmen, one might as well pay them a salary! No, brother, thieves were always nimbler than watchmen! Stand, stand, don’t stir..."
65 Five, ten minutes pass in silence. Suddenly the wind carries a whistle.
66 "Well, now off with you," says the passer-by, letting go of his arm. "Go and thank God you’re still alive."
67 The passer-by whistles too, runs off from the gate, and one hears him leap across the ditch. Sensing something very evil, and still trembling with fear, the watchman irresolutely opens the gate and, closing his eyes, runs back. At the turn onto the main avenue he hears someone’s hurried footsteps, and someone asks him in a hissing voice:
69 And having run the whole length of the main avenue, he notices in the darkness a small dim light. The nearer he comes to the light, the more terrible it grows, and the stronger the foreboding of something evil.
70 "The light, it seems, is in the church," he thinks. "How could it be there? Save and have mercy, Sovereign Lady! So it is indeed!"
71 For a minute the watchman stands before the broken window and looks in horror into the sanctuary... A small wax candle, which the thieves forgot to put out, flickers from the wind gusting through the window and casts dim red patches on the scattered vestments, the overturned little cupboard, on the numerous footprints around the altar and the offertory table...
72 A little more time passes, and the howling wind carries across the graveyard the hurried, uneven sounds of the alarm bell.
