A Fragment

Headnote

1 "A Fragment" ("Отрывок") is a brief comic sketch dated 1892, from the mature period following Chekhov’s return from Sakhalin and his settling at Melikhovo, when he continued to place short humorous pieces alongside his longer, more serious fiction. It survives in the standard Soviet Academy edition of his collected works.

2 The piece is a frame narrative: a retired civil servant, Kozerogov, buys a small estate and takes up amateur natural history in imitation of Cincinnatus and the real-life naturalist Dmitri Kaigorodov, keeping a diary of his observations. After his death the diary passes to his housekeeper, who converts his manor into a tavern; the narrator claims to have found a single surviving page among the papers left for travelers’ use, and reproduces its entries. The comedy turns entirely on the gap between Kozerogov’s pompous self-regard – he expects the very sparrows to address him as "Your Excellency" – and the pettiness of what he actually records: a rooster’s crowing, a district official’s small talk, a clumsy courtship of his housekeeper conducted in the language of rank and condescension. It is a slight, occasional piece, closer to the fast sketch-comedy of Chekhov’s early "Antosha Chekhonte" manner than to the withheld, tender-ironic mode of his other 1892 work.

Active State Councillor Kozerogov, on retiring from the service, bought himself a small estate and settled on it. There, following partly the example of Cincinnatus and partly that of Professor Kaigorodov, he labored in the sweat of his brow and kept a record of his observations of nature. After his death these notes, together with the rest of his property, passed by his will to his housekeeper, Marfa Yevlampievna. As is well known, the worthy old woman had the manor house pulled down and built in its place an excellent tavern with the sale of spirits. In this tavern there was a special "clean" room set aside for landowners and officials passing through, and on the table in this room lay the deceased’s notes, in case any traveler should find himself in need of paper. One sheet of the notes fell into my hands; it appears to date from the very beginning of the deceased’s career as a farmer, and contains the following:
"March 3rd. The spring arrival of the birds has already begun: yesterday I saw sparrows. Greetings to you, feathered children of the south! In your sweet chirping I seem to hear a wish: ’Be happy, Your Excellency!’"
March 14th. Today I asked Marfa Yevlampievna: "Why does the rooster crow so often?" She answered me: "Because he has a throat." And I said to her: "I too have a throat, and yet I do not crow!" How much that is mysterious there is in nature! While in the service in Petersburg I ate turkeys there many times, but saw them alive for the first time only yesterday. A most remarkable bird.
March 22nd. The district police captain came to call. We talked for a long while about virtue – I sitting, he standing. Among other things, he asked me: "And would you wish, Your Excellency, that your youth should return to you again?" To this I answered: "No, I do not wish it, for, being young, I would not have held such a rank." He agreed with me and drove off visibly moved.
April 16th. With my own hands I dug two beds in the kitchen garden and sowed them with semolina groats. I told no one of this, so as to make a surprise for my Marfa Yevlampievna, to whom I owe many happy moments in life. Yesterday over tea she complained bitterly of her figure, saying that her increasing stoutness already keeps her from passing through the door into the storeroom. To this I remarked: "On the contrary, my dear, the fullness of your forms serves only to adorn you and to increase my regard for you." She flushed, and I rose and embraced her with both arms, for one arm will not go round her.
May 28th. An old man, seeing me near the women’s bathing-place, asked me why I was sitting there. I answered him: "I am keeping watch, that young men may not come here and sit here." – "Then let us keep watch together." Having said this, the old man sat down beside me, and we fell to talking about virtue."
