Before the Eclipse

Headnote

1 "Before the Eclipse" ("Перед затмением," subtitled "A Fragment from a Fairy Extravaganza") is a brief comic sketch Chekhov wrote for the total solar eclipse of August 7 (19), 1887, which crossed the Russian Empire and drew enormous popular and scientific attention – astronomers from across Europe traveled to observation points in Russia to watch the path of totality. Chekhov turns the astronomical event into a piece of stage dialogue: the Sun and the Moon, personified as two minor officials or businessmen, sit behind the horizon drinking beer and negotiating the terms of the eclipse like a shady transaction.

2 The humor runs on two tracks. One is the haggling itself: the Moon complains about his poor reputation in literature (he quotes, accurately, lines from Pushkin and popular songs that treat the moon dismissively) and negotiates a fee and an advance for his labor, while the Sun tries to talk up the "publicity" value of being cursed at by a famous poet. The other is a satire of Moscow itself: the Sun, planning to darken only the northern half of the city while sparing the south, gives instructions steeped in the geography and social texture of 1880s Moscow – Zamoskvorechye (the merchant quarter across the river, associated with Alexander Ostrovsky’s plays and the phrase "dark kingdom"), the fair town of Nizhny Novgorod, and the market district of Okhotny Ryad. The eclipse becomes, in the Sun’s own confession, a publicity stunt to win back public attention and relieve mankind’s boredom – a joke very much in the spirit of Chekhov’s early comic journalism.

(A Fragment from a Fairy Extravaganza)
The Sun and the Moon are sitting behind the horizon, drinking beer.
Sun (pensively). M-yes, brother mine... I can manage you a twenty-five, but no more.
Moon. Cross my heart, your excellency, it costs me dearer than that myself. Judge for yourself, if you please: the gentlemen astronomers want the eclipse to begin in the Kingdom of Poland at 5 in the morning and end in Verkhneudinsk at 12, which means I’ll have to be on duty for the ceremony a full seven hours, sir... If you were to allow me five silver rubles an hour, even that would be cheap, sir. (Snatches a cloud scudding past by its train and blows his nose in it.) And don’t you go being stingy, your excellency. I’ll arrange you such an eclipse that even the lawyers will be green with envy. You’ll be quite satisfied, sir...
Sun (after a pause). Strange that you should haggle... You forget that I am inviting you to take part in a ceremony of world significance, that this eclipse will bring you popularity...
Moon (with a sigh and bitterness). We know that popularity, your excellency! "The moon hid behind a little cloud" and nothing more. Pure defamation... (Drinks.) Or: "On the sentry’s bayonet burns the midnight moon." And this too: "The moon floats across the nighttime skies..." Never in my born days have I floated, your excellency, so why such an insult?
Sun. M-yes, indeed, the press’s attitude toward you is, to say the least, strange... But be patient, brother... The time will come, and history will value you properly...
(A night-soil cart rumbles past below on the earth; both planets each snatch up a little cloud and press it to their noses.)
Moon. Can’t draw a breath... The state of affairs down there, I must say! A worthless planet! (Drinks.) I’ll not forget to my dying day how Mr. Pushkin cursed me out. "That foolish moon in that foolish sky..."
Sun. Insulting, of course, but all the same, brother, it’s advertising! I daresay Johann Hoff and Kach would pay dearly to have Pushkin abuse them in unflattering words... Advertising is a great thing. Just wait, there’ll be an eclipse, and people will start talking about you.
Moon. No, no, that I won’t have, your excellency! If anyone gets glory out of this eclipse, it’ll only be you. What they don’t know is that without me you’re helpless as without hands... Who’s to eclipse you without me? If you were to call in some lawyer, he’d skin you for a couple of thousand. But I, so be it, I’ll do it for three tenners.
Sun (having thought it over). Well, all right, only mind you don’t come asking for a tip afterward. Drink up! (Pours.) I trust you’ll do your best...
Moon. You may rest easy on that... The eclipse will come out honest, first-rate, sir... Since the very creation of the world I’ve been supplying moonlight and never a complaint... Everything will be fair and aboveboard. Allow me an advance, if you please...
Sun (gives the advance). I hear the water-carriers setting out... Time for me to rise... Well, I’m thinking of arranging the eclipse for the 7th of August, in the morning... Be ready by then... You’ll eclipse me so that the eclipse comes out as total as possible...
Moon. And on which places am I to direct the shadow?
Sun (having thought it over). It would be pleasant to show off before Western Europe, but they’re hardly likely to appreciate our little undertaking there... The local diplomats there consider themselves specialists in the matter of eclipses, so it’s hard to impress them... That leaves, then, Russia... That’s what the astronomers want too. Well, sir, direct the shadow onto Moscow, but with some sense too. Try to make the eclipse come out tendentious. Cover only the northern part of Moscow in darkness, and leave the southern part be... Let Zamoskvorechye, which lies in the southern part, see how we ignore it... A dark kingdom!
Moon. Very good, your excellency.
Sun. And besides, the merchants won’t understand the eclipse at all... Many of them are just back from Nizhny and haven’t slept it off yet, and the merchants’ wives will imagine God knows what... Well, sir, let’s touch Klin, Zavidovo lightly, generally the places where the astronomers have gathered, then Kazan and so on. I’ll think it over some more... (Pause.)
Moon. Your excellency, tell me honestly, for what devil’s sake did you get up this eclipse?
Sun. You see... but I trust this stays between us... I thought up the eclipse in order to restore my popularity... Of late I’ve noticed the public’s indifference... People spoke of me somehow less and less and paid no attention to my light. I even heard it said that the sun is outdated, that it’s an absurdity, that one could easily do without it altogether... Many have even denied me in print... I think the eclipse will set everyone talking about me. That’s one thing. Second, mankind has grown sick and tired of everything... It craves variety... You know, when a merchant’s wife tires of jam and pastille, she takes to gorging on groats; just so, when mankind tires of daylight, it must be treated to an eclipse... However, it’s time for me to rise... The young bucks of Okhotny Ryad are already off to market. Farewell.
Moon. One more word, your excellency... (Timidly.) In view of the eclipse, you might abstain from that little business... (Points at the beer bottles.) You never know, you might get tipsy, and there’d be an awkward scene.
Sun. Yes, I ought to abstain... (Reflecting.) Though, if it should so happen, if I sin and drink beyond measure, then... we’ll cover the sky with clouds, and no one will see us at all... However, farewell, it’s time... (Rises – alas! – hidden by clouds and mists.)
Moon. Our sins weigh heavy! (Lies down and covers himself with a cloud; a moment later snoring is heard.)
