1 Surveyor
Gleb Gavrilovich Smirnov arrived at the station of "Gnilushki." From there to the estate he had been summoned to for the land survey, he still had some thirty or forty
versts to travel by horse. (If the driver isn’t drunk and the horses aren’t nags, it might not even come to thirty versts, but if the driver has a screw loose and the horses are worn out, it can add up to a full fifty.)
2 "Tell me, please, where can I find some post-horses around here?" the surveyor addressed the station
gendarme.
3 "Which ones? Post-horses? You won’t find so much as a stray dog for a hundred versts around, let alone post-horses... Where is it you need to go, anyway?"
5 "Well then?" yawned the gendarme. "Go round behind the station, there are sometimes peasants in the yard there, they carry passengers."
6 The surveyor sighed and trudged off behind the station. There, after a long search, much talk, and much hesitation, he found a hulking peasant, sullen and pockmarked, dressed in a ragged homespun coat and
bast shoes.
7 "The devil knows what kind of cart this is!" the surveyor grimaced, climbing into the cart. "You can’t tell where the back is and where the front..."
8 "What’s there to tell? Where the horse’s tail is, that’s the front, and where your honor is sitting, that’s the back..."
9 The little horse was young but skinny, with splayed legs and bitten-up ears. When the driver stood up and lashed it with his rope whip, it only tossed its head; when he swore and lashed it again, the cart squealed and shuddered as if in a fever. After the third blow the cart lurched, and only after the fourth did it finally set off.
10 "Are we going to travel like this the whole way?" asked the surveyor, feeling a violent jolting and marveling at the ability of Russian drivers to combine a slow, tortoise-like pace with a soul-wrenching shaking.
11 "We’ll get the-e-ere!" the driver reassured him. "The little mare’s young, lively... Just let her get going, and then you won’t be able to stop her... Gee-e-e up, damn you!"
12 When the cart drove out of the station, it was dusk. To the surveyor’s right stretched a dark, frozen plain, without end or edge... Drive across it, and you’d surely end up at
the devil’s own doorstep. On the horizon, where it vanished and merged with the sky, a cold autumn sunset was lazily burning itself out... To the left of the road, in the darkening air, rose some mounds – last year’s haystacks, perhaps, or perhaps a village. What lay ahead the surveyor could not see, for on that side his whole field of view was blocked by the driver’s broad, ungainly back. It was quiet, but cold, frosty.
13 "What a wilderness this is, though!" thought the surveyor, trying to shield his ears with the collar of his coat. "Not a hut, not a home. If anything happened – if they attacked and robbed me, no one would ever know, not even if you fired off cannons... And the driver’s none too trustworthy either... Look at that back on him! A child of nature like that could touch you with one finger and your soul would fly right out! And his mug is savage, suspicious."
14 "Hey, friend," asked the surveyor, "what’s your name?"
16 "Well, Klim, how are things around here? Not dangerous? No mischief?"
17 "Nothing to speak of, God’s been merciful... Who’d there be to make mischief?"
18 "That’s good, that there’s no mischief... But just in case, I’ve still brought three revolvers along with me," the surveyor lied. "And with a revolver, you know, it’s no joke. You can handle ten robbers with one..."
19 It grew dark. Suddenly the cart creaked, squealed, shuddered, and, as if unwillingly, turned left.
20 "Where’s he taking me now?" thought the surveyor. "He was driving straight ahead the whole time and now suddenly turns left. Knowing him, the scoundrel, he’ll drag me off into some godforsaken den and... and... These things do happen!"
21 "Listen," he addressed the driver. "So you say it’s not dangerous around here? That’s a pity... I love fighting robbers... I may look thin and sickly, but I have the strength of a bull... Once three robbers attacked me... And what do you think happened? I gave one such a thrashing that... well, you understand, he gave up his soul to God, and the other two went off to
Siberia, to
hard labor, on my account. Where I get this strength from, I don’t know... Take some big strapping fellow like you with one hand and... and knock him right over."
22 Klim glanced back at the surveyor, blinked with his whole face, and lashed the little horse.
23 "Yes, brother..." the surveyor went on. "God forbid anyone tangle with me. Not only would the robber be left without hands or feet, but he’d answer before the court besides... All the judges and the district police are acquaintances of mine. I’m a government man, a necessary man... Here I am traveling, and my superiors know it... so they keep an eye out that no one does me any harm. All along the road there are constables and village policemen posted behind every bush... Wa-wa-wait!" the surveyor suddenly bellowed. "Where have you driven to now? Where are you taking me?"
24 "Why, don’t you see? A forest!"
25 "Indeed, a forest..." thought the surveyor. "And here I was frightened! But I mustn’t show my agitation... He’s already noticed I’m scared. Why has he started looking back at me so often? He must be plotting something... Before he was driving barely at all, at a snail’s pace, and now look how he’s racing!"
26 "Listen, Klim, why are you driving the horse so hard?"
27 "I’m not driving her. She’s taken off on her own... Once she gets going, there’s no way on earth to stop her... And she herself isn’t happy that her legs are made that way."
28 "You’re lying, brother! I can see you’re lying! Only I don’t advise you to go so fast. Hold the horse back a little... Do you hear? Hold her back!"
30 "Well, because... because four comrades of mine are supposed to be riding out from the station after me. They need to catch up with us... They promised to catch up with me in this very forest... It’ll be merrier traveling with them... Sturdy fellows, thickset... each one carrying a pistol... Why do you keep looking back and fidgeting like you’re sitting on pins? Eh? I, brother, that is... brother... There’s nothing for you to look back at me for... there’s nothing interesting about me... Except perhaps the revolvers... If you like, I’ll take them out, show you... If you like..."
31 The surveyor made a show of rummaging in his pockets, and at that moment something happened that he could not have expected, for all his own cowardice. Klim suddenly tumbled out of the cart and ran off on all fours toward the thicket.
32 "Help!" he wailed. "Help! Take the horse and the cart, damn you, only don’t destroy my soul! Help!"
33 There came the sound of quick, receding footsteps, the crackling of brush – and then all was silence... The surveyor, who had not expected such a rebuff, first of all stopped the horse, then settled himself more comfortably in the cart and fell to thinking.
34 "He’s run off... got scared, the fool... Well, what now? I can’t go on by myself, because I don’t know the road, and besides they might think I
stole his horse from him... What’s to be done?" – "Klim! Klim!"
35 "Klim!.." the echo answered.
36 At the thought that he would have to sit the whole night in the dark forest, in the cold, hearing nothing but wolves, the echo, and the snorting of the scrawny little mare, a shiver ran down the surveyor’s spine, as if from a cold file.
37 "Klimushka!" he shouted. "My dear fellow! Where are you, Klimushka?"
38 The surveyor shouted for two hours, and only after he had gone hoarse and made his peace with the idea of spending the night in the forest did a faint breeze carry someone’s groan to him.
39 "Klim! Is that you, my dear fellow? Let’s go!"
40 "You’ll... you’ll kill me!"
41 "But I was joking, my dear fellow! God strike me, I was joking! What revolvers could I have! I was lying out of fear! Do me a kindness, let’s go! I’m freezing!"
42 Klim, having evidently reasoned that a real robber would long since have made off with the horse and cart, came out of the forest and approached his passenger hesitantly.
43 "Well, what were you so scared of, you fool? I... I was joking, and you got scared... Get in!"
44 "God be with you, master," Klim grumbled, climbing into the cart. "If I’d known, I wouldn’t have driven you for a hundred silver rubles. I nearly died of fright..."
45 Klim lashed the little horse. The cart shuddered. Klim lashed it once more, and the cart lurched. After the fourth blow, when the cart finally set off, the surveyor covered his ears with his collar and fell to thinking. The road and Klim no longer seemed dangerous to him.
