1 Written in Moscow on 8 March 1886 to Nikolai Alexandrovich Leikin, the publisher of the humor magazine "Oskolki" ("Splinters") and Chekhov’s principal editor in these years. The letter is a dense round of magazine business: thanks for a flattering report of praise from the novelist Dmitry Grigorovich, confirmation that proofs arrived clean, gossip about the shadowy publisher Levinsky of a rival paper, detailed instructions for the printing clichés of a vignette (with the original to be returned after publication), and news of Chekhov’s brother Nikolai, an illustrator whose unsteady, debt-ridden life recurs throughout the correspondence.
2 The letter is a good specimen of the working relationship between Chekhov and Leikin at the height of Chekhov’s "Antosha Chekhonte" period – brisk, practical, and shot through with the same comic timing found in his fiction, as in the mock-Biblical image of himself "tried before the sanhedrin" (i.e., before a magistrate) and fined 50 rubles. It closes not with the usual signature but with a genuine postscript: the news of the fine and its unwelcome effect on his finances, followed by an informal sign-off, "A. Ch."

I have just received your letter, dearest Nikolai Alexandrovich! Thank you for the details you sent. Your lines about Grigorovich, unless they are merely exaggerated by your wish to say something pleasant to me, gave me great pleasure.

I have received the packet with the five sheets. Thank the proofreader for me: I did not find a single error in all five sheets. You were right to call her ideal. If, of course, she will not be offended, and if you advise me to, then once the book comes out I shall give her a present of some kind.

Levinsky, whom you saw at Suvorin’s, is not the editor of "The Alarm Clock." He is its unofficial publisher... He is employed as: a clerk on special assignments at the post office, a superintendent at the Polytechnic Museum, secretary of various charitable societies, and so on. A kind, soft man, but timid and faint of heart. He and I are friends: he certifies my signature for me under the post-office announcements...

The cliché is ready! Tomorrow it will go off with this letter to the post. I am sending: 1) the cliché for the black ink, 2) the cliché for the red, and 3) the original of the vignette for the guidance of the lithographers. On the original, the places drawn in violet ink should be absolutely black. The inscription "Publication of the journal ’Oskolki’" did not etch out properly, and so must be set in thin typographic type.

На оригинале места, нарисованные лиловыми чернилами, должны быть абсолютно черны. Подпись "Издание журнала "Осколки"" не вытравилась, а потому должна быть набрана типографским, тонким шрифтом.
You see that the vignette is not bad, though the figure came out rather poorly... Please be so good as to return the original once the book has come out, for it is, so to speak, the material proof of the immaterial kindness of my material friend.

Agafopod has got into debt and wants to bolt from N—... The devil only knows how his life has turned out! He does not drink, does not smoke, and gives no balls, yet he cannot manage to live in the provinces on 120–150 rubles a month, when I, with a large family, was living in Moscow two or three years ago on 100–120. And yet he lives wretchedly, eats rubbish!

Today I went to see Nikolai and brought him home. He has just received money from "All-Russia Illustration," for which he did the funeral of Aksakov. He is, of course, not living as well as he could. When I asked him whether he wished to work for "Oskolki" again, he answered: "Of course! I’ll send a drawing there tomorrow!"
So expect it tomorrow, and I congratulate you in advance. If this "tomorrow" stretches out to two or four weeks, we shall have to be glad that it did not stretch to two or four months.
Стало быть, ждите завтра, с чем Вас и поздравляю. Если это завтра протянется 2–4 недели, то придется радоваться, что оно не протянулось 2–4 месяца.

On the 5th of March I was in the sanhedrin, that is to say, I was tried before the justice of the peace, and sentenced to pay 50 rubles.
5-го марта я был в синедрионе, сиречь судился у мирового, и присужден к уплате 50 руб.
If you have ever happened to pay someone else’s debts, then you will understand what a revolution these foolish 50 rubles, falling on my head so inopportunely, have raised in my small financial world.
Если Вам приходилось когда-нибудь платить чужие долги, то Вы понимаете, какую революцию подняли в моем маленьком финансовом мире эти глупые, некстати на голову свалившиеся 50 руб.
