Headnote

1 Written in Moscow on 14 December 1886 to Nikolai Alexandrovich Leikin, the publisher of the humor magazine "Oskolki" ("Splinters") and Chekhov’s principal editor of the mid-1880s. Chekhov reports sending a story and a short piece to meet his weekly deadline, passes along news of his brother Nikolai (a painter) and the landscape painter Isaac Levitan both working on illustrations for Leikin, mentions a visit to an unnamed acquaintance he calls "the pagan god," nudges Leikin about advertising his recently published book, and asks after a Christmas ("святочный") story Leikin may not need since another contributor, "Yusha," has already supplied one.

2 A characteristic specimen of the brisk, joking, business-mixed-with-banter correspondence Chekhov kept up with Leikin throughout his years writing for "Oskolki" and "Peterburgskaya Gazeta." The letter mixes trade talk (deadlines, illustrators, advertising for his book) with private jokes and nicknames whose full referents are now obscure, plus closing family greetings and a stray remark about breeding dogs – the everyday texture of a working freelance writer’s life in December 1886, on the eve of the period that would bring "Ivan Matveyich" and the mature stories of 1887.

I am sending you, most kind Nikolai Alexandrovich, a story and a trifle. For one more week I have secured myself against reproaches for carelessness!
Levitan has taken up the subject. Nikolai too. When they will finish the work I do not know. Levitan has probably already sent you the drawing, and Nikolai promised to send his...
Yesterday I was at the pagan god’s. He has not yet moved to the new apartment and in January he is planning to go to Petersburg. The goddess will probably let him go, since she is not protesting.
Khudekov did not come to see me. By the way: tell Buylov to run the advertisement for my book. Besides "Novosti Dnya" there are no advertisements anywhere. Without advertising the book cannot sell.
We have sledging conditions decent enough that I drove out to Strelna.
I do not know whether I shall send you a Christmas story by the 21st. And do you even need one? You told me you already have Yusha’s Christmas story.
Have you seen Agafopod?
And with that, wishing your masseur success and bowing to you, I remain

A bow from my sister to Praskovya Nikiforovna and Fedyukha.
If Apel’s son does not take after his parents, then of course I shall not take him. I need a copy of Apel, and mongrels can be found in Moscow too.
