Svyatochny Rasskaz (Yuletide Tale)

Christmas story

also: святочный рассказ, Yuletide tale, Christmas-week story

A Russian literary genre of short story traditionally published around Christmas and New Year, typically featuring the supernatural, a moral twist, or a domestic ghost story. Chekhov signals the convention with his subtitle and then subverts it with a comic rather than eerie resolution.
