1 A NIGHT IN THE CEMETERY
(A CHRISTMASTIDE TALE)
3 Ivan Ivanych twirled his mustache, cleared his throat, smacked his lips, and, drawing closer to the young ladies, began:
4 "My story begins the way all the best Russian tales generally begin: I was, I must confess, drunk... I was seeing in the New Year at the home of an old friend of mine, and I got as tight as forty thousand brothers. In my own defense I must say that I did not get drunk out of joy. To rejoice over such nonsense as a new year is, in my opinion, absurd and unworthy of a human mind. The new year is just as much rubbish as the old one, with the sole difference that the old year was bad, while the new one is always worse... In my opinion, on meeting the new year one ought not to rejoice but to suffer, to weep, to make an attempt on one’s own life. One must not forget that the newer the year, the nearer one is to death, the broader the bald spot, the more winding the wrinkles, the older the wife, the more the children, the less the money..."
5 "And so I drank from grief... When I left my friend’s, the cathedral clock struck exactly two. The weather outside was the vilest imaginable... The devil himself couldn’t have told whether it was winter or autumn. Such darkness all around that you could put your eye out on it: you look and look and see nothing, as if you’d been shut up in a can of boot-blacking. The rain was lashing down... A cold, sharp wind was drawing out terrible notes; it howled, it wept, it moaned, it shrieked, as if a witch herself were conducting the orchestra of nature. Underfoot the slush sobbed plaintively; the streetlamps looked dim, like weeping widows... Poor nature was living through a Friedrich-heraus... In short, it was weather that a thief or a brigand might have rejoiced in, but not I, a humble and tipsy townsman. It plunged me into a mournful frame of mind..."
6 "’Life – one long dreary business... – I philosophized, splashing through the mud and reeling. – An empty, colorless vegetating... a mirage... The days pass one after another, the years after the years, and you’re the same beast you always were... More years will pass, and you’ll remain the very same Ivan Ivanovich, drinking, snacking, sleeping... In the end they’ll bury you, blockhead, in the ground, they’ll eat memorial pancakes at your expense and say: he was a good man, but a pity, the scoundrel, he left so little money!’"
7 "I was walking from
Meshchanskaya to
Presnya – a respectable distance for a man in drink... Making my way through dark, narrow lanes, I did not meet a single living soul, did not hear a single living sound. Afraid of getting my galoshes full, I walked at first on the pavement, then, when despite my precautions my galoshes began to squelch plaintively, I turned onto the roadway: there’s less chance there of running into a post or falling into a ditch..."
8 "My path was wrapped in a cold, impenetrable dark; at first I passed dimly burning streetlamps along the way, but then, when I had gone through two or three lanes, even that comfort vanished. I had to feel my way... Peering into the gloom and hearing the wind’s plaintive howling above me, I hurried on... My soul was gradually filling with an inexplicable dread... That dread turned to horror when I began to notice that I had lost my way, had strayed from my path."
9 "’Cabby!’ I shouted."
10 "No answer came... So I resolved to go straight ahead, wherever my eyes might lead me, at random, in the hope that sooner or later I would come out onto a main street, where there are streetlamps and cabbies. Not looking back, afraid to glance to either side, I broke into a run... A sharp, cold wind blew against me, a heavy rain lashed at my eyes... Now I ran along the pavements, now along the roadway... How my forehead survived its frequent encounters with posts and lamp-standards is altogether beyond me."
11 Ivan Ivanych drank off a glass of vodka, twirled his other mustache, and went on:
12 "I don’t remember how long I ran... I remember only that in the end I stumbled and struck myself painfully against some strange object... I could not see it, but feeling it, I got the impression of something cold, wet, smoothly polished... I sat down on it to rest... I won’t abuse your patience, but I’ll say only that when, a little later, I struck a match to light a cigarette, I saw that I was sitting on a gravestone..."
13 "I, who up to then had seen nothing around me but darkness, and had heard not a single human sound, on seeing the gravestone leapt up in horror and shut my eyes... Taking a step away from the stone, I stumbled against another object... And picture my horror! It was a wooden cross..."
14 "’My God, I’ve ended up in a cemetery! – I thought, covering my face with my hands and sinking down onto the stone. – Instead of going to Presnya, I’ve wandered off to
Vagankovo!’"
15 "I am not afraid of cemeteries, nor of the dead... I am free of superstitions and long ago got rid of my old nurse’s fairy tales, but finding myself among silent graves on a dark night, when the wind was moaning and thoughts one gloomier than the next were wandering through my head, I felt my hair stand on end and an inward cold spread down my spine..."
16 "’It can’t be! – I comforted myself. – It’s an optical illusion, a hallucination... All this only seems so to me because
Depré, Bauer, and Arabazhi are sitting in my head... Coward!’"
17 "And even as I was bracing myself up this way, I heard quiet footsteps... Someone was walking slowly, but... those were not human footsteps... they were too quiet, too small for a human being..."
18 "’A corpse,’ I thought."
19 "At last this mysterious ’someone’ came up to me, touched my knee, and sighed... After that I heard a howl... The howl was terrible, a graveyard howl, one that clutched at the soul... If it’s frightening enough to listen to nurses telling tales of howling corpses, then what is it to hear the very howl itself! I went numb and turned to stone with horror... Depré, Bauer, and Arabazhi leapt clean out of my head, and not a trace remained of my drunken state... It seemed to me that if I opened my eyes and risked a glance into the dark, I would see a pale-yellow, bony face, a half-rotted shroud..."
20 "’God, if only morning would come sooner,’ I prayed."
21 "But before morning came, I had to live through one horror beyond words, beyond description. Sitting on the stone and listening to the howl of the grave’s inhabitant, I suddenly heard new footsteps... Someone, treading heavily and evenly, was coming straight at me... Drawing level with me, this new arrival from the grave sighed, and a minute later a cold, bony hand came down heavily on my shoulder... I lost consciousness."
22 Ivan Ivanych drank off a glass of vodka and grunted.
23 "Well?" the young ladies asked him.
24 "I came to in a small square room... Through the one barred little window the dawn was faintly breaking. ’Well,’ I thought, ’so this means the dead have dragged me off into their own vault’... But what was my joy when I heard human voices behind the wall:"
25 "’Where did you get him?’ someone’s bass voice was demanding."
26 "’Over by
Belobrysov’s monument shop, your honor,’ answered another bass, ’where the gravestones and crosses are set out. I look, and there he is, sitting and hugging a monument, and some dog is howling beside him... Must’ve been drinking...’"
27 "In the morning, when I woke up, they let me out..."
