Letter · 1887

To N. A. Leikin, 17 April 1887. Taganrog.

Headnote

1 Written on 17 April 1887 from Taganrog, Chekhov’s native town on the Sea of Azov, where he had gone to visit family and was delayed by illness. The addressee is again Nikolai Alexandrovich Leikin, the Petersburg publisher of the humor magazine Oskolki (Fragments) and Chekhov’s regular editor and correspondent through the 1880s; the two habitually swapped reports on their respective ailments, real and imagined, as a running joke of their correspondence.

2 The letter opens with a mock-competitive catalogue of Chekhov’s own complaints (hemorrhoids, intestinal trouble, bronchitis, a vein inflammation in his leg) before pivoting into an extended, half-serious medical lecture – doctor Chekhov diagnosing hypochondriac Leikin over distance, dismissing his patent remedies, and prescribing plain living, milk, fresh air, and regular bowels in their place. It closes with practical travel and forwarding-address instructions for an upcoming trip into the Don steppe country, and a note about redirecting a magazine honorarium through his uncle.

Taganrog. 17 April.
My respects to you, ailing Nikolai Alexandrovich! I inform you that I too have not disgraced myself and am not falling behind you in the matter of ailments. I have several illnesses, quite troublesome ones and ones that are literally poisoning my existence: 1) hemorrhoids with lumps and itching, 2) an inflammation of the bowels, defeated by nothing and probably brought on by the qualities of the local water, 3) bronchitis with a cough, and finally 4) inflammation of a vein in my left leg – the illness that has kept me in Taganrog. Now reckon it up: who has more of every kind of filth, you or I?
Your letter was received today. If you have given up the massage, then why not, while you’re at it, drop the valerian and lily-of-the-valley drops for Valya as well? I, though you kill me for it, decidedly do not understand what you take the lily-of-the-valley and valerian for. These remedies will do no harm, but no good either. For hypochondriacal people, incidentally, harmlessly useless remedies, taken for nothing, often serve as a source of fear: "I’ve been taking the drops for a whole month now, and they aren’t helping me; so the doctor must not have understood me..."
To me it is strange, this combination of valerian with lily-of-the-valley; strange that nerves as ropy as yours should seek calm in such trifles; strange that lily-of-the-valley is taken when there is no indication for it. In my opinion, what you need is:
1) Live as you like at Tosna, work in the open air, but do not tire yourself. Drink milk, eat well, and see to it that your bowels move conscientiously on the lower end, that is, not less than once a day.
2) Throw the whole pharmacy away.
3) Pay no attention to palpitations, faint spells, and so forth, remembering that people do not die of palpitations and faint spells.
4) Do not think about your ailments at all, or think of them less often. You need only pay attention to your heart, listen to it, for the pulse to quicken by 10–15 beats.
5) In case of hypochondria, fear of death, or anguish, pay attention not so much to the heart, which in your case is sound, as to the stomach and bowels. You surely have a dilated stomach – an illness in which melancholy is a constant phenomenon.
6) For the next 5–10 years do not think about illnesses at all and do not pay them any serious attention. Old age will come, and then it will be a different matter...
Such is my opinion.
Tomorrow I am certainly going to the Don country. You may send me one letter to the address: "Station Ivanovka-Krestnaya, Donets Coal Railway, to Gavriil Pavlovich Kravtsov," to be passed on to me.
One letter, but no more. The next one you should again write to Taganrog.
I wrote to Bilibin that the honorarium should be sent to me in the name of my uncle Mitrofan Yegorovich Chekhov, in Taganrog.
Well, farewell. Give my regards to your family. The weather here is splendid.
A. Chekhov.
