The Donets Coal Railway (Донецкая каменноугольная железная дорога), serving the coal-mining Donbas region; Chekhov is shuttling along this line between Zverevo, Novocherkassk, and points further south during his spring 1887 journey to the steppe country that would later furnish material for "Steppe."
