1 This is a brief postcard-style note to Chekhov’s older brother Ivan Pavlovich Chekhov, a schoolteacher who at this time lived and worked at the Arbat school in Moscow (the address on the back is his). It was written during Chekhov’s 1888 journey along the Caucasus coast – after stops in Kerch, New Athos, and Sukhum, he writes from Poti on his way to Batum. The "regards" in section 3 are addressed through Ivan to their father, Pavel Yegorovich Chekhov, who was also in Moscow at the time; it is a message for Ivan to relay, not a remark to Ivan himself.
I have been in Kerch, in New Athos, in Sukhum, and now I am strolling about Poti. After dinner I’ll take the post-horses to Batum. In every town I stop for a day.
Был я в Керчи, в Новом Афоне, в Сухуме, теперь гуляю по Поти. После обеда поеду на почтовых в Батум. В каждом городе сижу по дню.
